HELP ME! Ipod 3g cant be seen by my mac

i have a ipod 3rd generation 20 gigs and i cant get it to be reconized by me computer. it only can go into disk mode. when i plug it into my firewire port the ipod get's charged but it says ok to disconect. but then i plug it into my usb port it says do not disconect but nothing happes on my computer.
HOW CAN I FIX MY IPOD? i do not have apple care for my ipod and i bought it on July 2, 2004 and i use it on a powermac g3 blue and white with tiger 10.4.2

Try launching the latest iPod Software Updater and then plugging in the iPod. Possibly the updater will see it before the Mac gives it a miss. If that happens, restore it.

no it dosen't it does nothing only says plug in an ipod to begin and disk utility does not work eather. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME!!!!

Couple of other things you can try:
A different cable.
Try plugging it into a different computer -- a Mac or PC -- and see if it can be restored there. I've had iPods that refuse to be restored on one of my machines but can be restored on another. If you don't have more than one computer, find a friend whose computer can run the iPod software and try it there.

i did that on another mac my ipod was detected on there computer but was in itunes and the ipod updater

It was in iPod updater (or did you mean was not)? If the former, restore it. If it didn't show in either, you may have a broken iPod. One other thing to try is to drain the battery -- start it playing and let it die. Then let it sit for a day or so. Then try charging it and see if your Mac sees it.
