Couple of other things you can try:
A different cable.
Try plugging it into a different computer -- a Mac or PC -- and see if it can be restored there. I've had iPods that refuse to be restored on one of my machines but can be restored on another. If you don't have more than one computer, find a friend whose computer can run the iPod software and try it there.

It was in iPod updater (or did you mean was not)? If the former, restore it. If it didn't show in either, you may have a broken iPod. One other thing to try is to drain the battery -- start it playing and let it die. Then let it sit for a day or so. Then try charging it and see if your Mac sees it.
