About a week ago, my email icon (the stamp in the dock) began jumping up & down every once in a while and I now get a popup window that says "The POP server pop.pacbell.yahoo.com rejected the password for user 'xxxxxxx@pacbell.yahoo.com' Please re-enter your password, or cancel." I entered my password once, but it keeps coming back. Now I just click on the cancel button.
I also notice that my Mail program is now showing as working offline. I can't find a button that tells it to work "online".
Does anyone know what might have caused this and how to fix it?
thanks in advance.

This tends to happen when your ISP is having mail server problems. If it happens to me I just click on 'cancel' and get on with other things until the server is up again. To go back on line - assuming the server is back up - the path in Mail is Mailbox > On line status > Go online.

You can also click on the "lightning bolt" next to the account name in the Inbox folder. This will put you back online for Mail.
I find this bizarre dance happens when I move from one hotspot to another without first closing mail (such as being at Starbucks, putting laptop to sleep without closing mail, then going home and awakening). So I would suggest closing Mail before putting your computer sleep and then reawakening it on another network.

I also had the same trouble some time ago with another ISP. In the beginning I've configured the mail app to check every minute the mails. But after a while the mail icon starts to bounce and asked for the password.
The problem was that mine ISP was blocking mine computer because it was connecting too much in a particular time. Some sort of flood protection from their side. The solution was to configure the mail app to check at every 5 minutes.
