Can someone tell me whether when you add a song to the ITunes Library,
(1) the file is copied to the iTunes Library AND remains in the original folder
ie. there are now 2 copies of that file on my hard disk and I am wasting
disk space by keeping the file in the original location.
OR
(2) iTunes creates a reference to where the original file is stored without
actually physically copying to another place on the hard drive.
Cheers in advance

It kinda looks like the answer is (1) if the iTunes Advanced Preference "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" is switched on, and (2) if that pref is off.

I concur. You have both options. You may leave the files in place or make a copy of them. Just a matter of the iTunes pref settings.
