I just got my iMac today, and so far it's been amazing. I'm trying to download Windows Media Player, but when I do and open the downloaded file, it says it can't find the program to open it with. Please help!

heh
a search on that topic would have shown you the way.
Apple no longer includes Stuffit Expander
download the expander and install it.
it will open up all those nasty .sit and .bin files for you.

Also you may be interested in another application for viewing AVI files and other video files that quick time and WIndows media player may not open.
VideoLAN Client - VLC - is a very handy application to have on your computer.

No, WMV Player cannot play WMV3 files. I've found this to be a file format unsupported on X. If I am wrong someone please correct me so I can watch these files, too.

I too got an iMac and cannot play videos on a great number of sites. My wife is a cmt.com fan and none of the videos play. However, the commercials play (natch!) but then the screen goes black and no video starts. I have Real Player, WMV. I sometimes get some warning about "MIME plug-in needed".
Well, download flip4mac WMV version and that didn't do anything. In Firefox nothing at all happens when I select a video and in Safari I'm prompted to download some kind of plug in and I get a weird icon or I get this message:
"Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesnt support. The application Windows Media Player may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?"
I see Window Media 10 is available but the site will only let me download WMP9. Thanks.

somethings are going to be just pure windows.. bad form on the website developers. adn really bad form on MS's part.. they haven't released v10 for the Mac and those don't play nice with Macs.
and more and more sites are using it.
but another thought is could those of you that are having problems post an example link of what's not playing?
plenty people around here take that as a challenge and if there is a Mac application that will play the link, we can post it back so you can then use the app that works.
if can be done on the Mac, my money is someone will post it for you.
