Could a person realistically ditch their phone service in favor of an all-Skype household setup?

You can if you have a bluetooth headset.

Bah. Forget it. My wife will never use a headset. Now, offer me a Bluetooth handset and we could talk (pun intended)....

Sure, using a Mac compatible Skype handset. It'll be nice when a wireless one like the Windows only Linksys product is released for Mac.
But then again, I love my Vonage and using a real telephone. If one is adventurous enough, they could even use Asterisk and an independent VoIP provider with a pay-as-you-go plan to make their own equivalent of Skype but be able to use regular phones.

If Skype would add more regions for SkypeIn I might try replacing my landline with it. But until then it's not really so useful. I also wish someone would create a cross platform chat client with av. Outside the US few if anyone uses AIM.
