i'm [filtered] that there's no more FW800 on it. i don't care if eSATA is going to takeover. FW800 is the way i live right now. highly unlikely i'll be picking up this first MacBook Pro.

5) You don't need a Dual G5 to do video editing. My 867 MHz G4 PowerBook runs iMovie and iDVD just fine. iMovie originated in OS 9 on a G3. So you don't need the top of the line G5 to do video editing.

Damn straight!
I run FinalCut Pro and FinalCut Express on my 867 MHz G4 Desktop, and my 17" PowerBook edits video quite nicely, thankyouverymuch.
Could it be faster? Yeah. But I've made a very comfortable living off those two machines, and (until yesterday) didn't see a compelling need to upgrade. It'll be interesting to see what the new desktop models will look like, but if the speed claims about the new iMac are true, and if the performance is really there, it should be a smokin' machine.
It's a great time to be a Mac user.

after reading what everyone was saying and reading the given specs for the new macbook pro, i do agree that it is a bit of a step backwards in terms of missing features all for the sake of faster processing and perhaps just to get it on the shelves.
be that as it may, as a proud owner of a pbook g4, my biggest gripe has to be ...
NO S-VIDEO OUT!!! i loved the fact that i've been able to watch episodes of my favorite shows playing from my pbook onto my tv. quite a dissapointment.
no fw800
no built-in modem
no dl burning
no s-video out
not as great as i originally thought this machine would be. i was about to order one, too.
however, it is a sizeable step forward in performance, nonetheless, i'm sure.

Other than the obvious wait of 30 days, what's involved in dual booting Windows XP to play games like BF2 and even newer bleeding edge games (the only real reason for having Windows)? Do you need a boot manager? Partition magic?

We should know about things like double booting very soon since the imacs are already shipping. I'm sure there are many budding Dr. Macensteins already at work.

I'm using a almost six-year old Pismo PowerBook still (wonderful machine that's never given me a moment's trouble) but it's getting long in the tooth, and I'm in the market for a replacement laptop but I'm frankly torn about this new MacBook Pro. It makes me nervous to buy the first version of any new system (even from a quality vendor like Apple) and I'm now wondering if it might not be a smarter move to buy one of the PB G4s before they're gone--but that might lock me in at decidedly slower speeds, and I like the idea of this much brighter screen available in the MacBook Pro. I use my laptop all day--I'm a heavy user of Office 2004 and the web; with increasing use of iLife apps for my business & family. For those of who tend to upgrade our hardware infrequently--is there a consensus on the best choice re buying the proven-but-slower G4 PowerBook or waiting for the MacBook Pros to shake out any initial problems? I'm sort of thinking that, since I tend to keep laptops a long time, go with the higher speed. . .suggestions/insights appreciated, thanks.

There will be no video iPod.
Nobody wants a radio tuner with their iPod.
Apple will never make a multibutton mouse.
Apple will never use Intel processors.

Here's another comparison, this is probably a better one.
The TravelMate 8200, features the new Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology, which was introduced on January 3, 2006.
Model: TM8204WLMi
SKU: LX.TAX06.034
UPC: 099802481810
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor: Intel Core Duo Processor T2500 (2MB L2 cache, 2.0GHz, 667MHz FSB)
Memory: 2GB (1/1) DDR2 667 SDRAM
Storage: 120GB SATA hard drive; modular Super-Multi drive (DVDR, DVD-R, DVD-RAM); 5-in-1 card reader for optional MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO or xD-Picture Card
TFT Display: 15.4" WSXGA
(1680 x 1050)
Graphics: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1600
Connectivity: 802.11a/b/g WLAN, Bluetooth, gigabit LAN, V.92 modem
ESP (estimated street price):
- Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology
- User upgradeable up to 2GB (one 1GB memory card in each slot)
- Interface ports: DC-in, RJ-11 modem, RJ-45 LAN, VGA, DVI (digital visual interface), headphones/speakers/line-out with SPDIF support, microphone, line-in, S-video TV-out, FireWire (IEEE 1394), FIR (fast infrared), four USB 2.0, connector for optional ezDock docking station
- 14.3" (364.0mm) W x 10.7" (271.0mm) D x 1.0" (26.3mm) H / 6.6 lb. (3.0kg) with optical drive installed
- Lithium ion batteries:
- Nine-cell - up to 3.5 hours life :thumbdown depending on configuration and usage
- Optional secondary six-cell - up to 2.0 hours life depending on configuration and usage
- Both batteries - 80% charge in 1.0 hour, 2.0 hours recharge time with power off, 2.5 hours with power on
- Acer Video Conference: VVoIP (voice and video over IP) via Acer OrbiCam integrated 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera and Bluetooth VoIP phone
- Black carbon-fiber chassis
- One-year parts and labor limited warranty$2,499.00
To compare the macbook, upgrade ram to 2gig and HD to 120, that puts you at $2899.
So that's $400 more for the mac. The mac has the weight advantage by about a pound. The acer has a faster processor, higher screen resolution, more USB, s video out. And the Acer reportedly does dual layer burning. Don't know what software the acer has, probably not as much.
I'd be able to swallow the price difference if the mac was at least the same speed CPU. So is apple going to perpetually lag in clock speeds, or will a 2gig version cost another $500?

I found a FW800 card that should work...

Not going to work I don't think. It looks like an ExpressCard/54 instead of the ExpressCard/34 found on the MacBook. Basically, the card is too big by 20 mm.

There is a picture of the two card sizes here

Link?
edit: I just looked up the sku number you gave and no surprise there is nearly no information on the net about this new machine. I don't think you can really speculate on the prices yet. The MSRP for that machine is $2499.00 and it isn't clear what the memory size, disk size or the clock speed is. Unless you have a better link.

With an expansion chassis? I don't consider that portable any more.

I was thinking of with an MBox... I don't believe any laptop is sufficient (Windows or Mac, new or old) for audio production without some sort of external device. I mean, what are you going to do? Plug a $1000 Neumann mic into the 1/8th inch jack?
For hard drive, there are some bus powered drives that will fit in a shirt pocket that are more than fast enough.

"I was thinking of with an MBox..."
Which means you're running your plugins native. I'd hardly say a G4 is going to handle whatever session you throw at it. Sure, you can do some audio, but it will be extremely limited by the cpu power.

What about the digital audio inputs?

It is considered helpful to actually link to something you quote.
Note that this is a "quote" from an email that theoretically came from Acer. It really doesn't represent an actual quote to purchase a system.
I doubt at the very least that the base system comes max'd out with 2 GB or RAM for $2500 if nothing else. I do agree that the TravelMate is a much closer system comparison to Apple's MacBook than anything from Dell though. But until you can actually buy it from somewhere, the price is not real.
I googled the the SKU given and I got numbers all over the place but none in stock obviously.
