Nope. PowerBook has little brand recognition compared to "Mac" but at least it sounds cool. Even if you don't know what one is.
I understand the name-recognition angle but having "mac" or "mc" as a first syllable makes it sound like a mc-sandwich. Yuck! Do you really want free-association in people's minds between characteristics of the fast food industry and the world's greatest computer? It'll be a part of the unquantifiable subconscious response with a name like that. Apple doesn't have overwhelming market share that lets some companies get away with unfortunate names.

First syllable or not, I think you're reaching just a bit. Does the average consumer on the street think that the Mac mini, .Mac, iMac, eMac, Power Mac are McDonald's products?
I highly doubt that's the case.

Is POWER PC an old IBM Risc thing? They are done with that now hence the name change.

Except the PowerBook 100 didn't have a POWER PC in it. Powerbook was the name before the PowerPC arrived.
It's just a name change. Remember System 7? Then System was dropped and "OS" replaced it. Then the way updates were named changed (9 > 9.1 > 9.2) is now (10.2.0 > 10.2.1 > 10.2.2)
Just different.

I like the name. MacBook Pro sounds cool. It certainly lets you know that its not the Powerbook. Its totally new. This certainly is in line with naming of the mac mini. Maybe Apple intends to put Mac infront of the new transition products.
Has any one seen what it looks like? It looks a little deferent in the gallery on Apples website. I think that I am more surprised with Apple transitioning the new processor into the higher end computer than something like the e-mac or mac mini. The e-mac is not even on the Apple Website so that one must be gone.
In personnel opinion, I would not be the first to jump on the bandwagon to buy the MacBook Pro at this time. Its Version 1 and with the new processors, I am sure it will take some time to iron out all the bugs with running applications. When the the first new iMac Flat Panel G4 where announced at the MacWorld Conference 4 years ago, I bought one from the Apple Store three days after the announcement. It was my switch to apple phase of computer life (I was using a Gateway Pentium 3 at that time). It was such an exciting time for me me to get a new computer and to switch to a new operating system. I couldnt wait to get it and it seemed to take forever to get it from Apple too. It just seemed like a new 17 inch version came within 3 months of getting the 15 inch version. Its still a classic looking machine. I was at MOMA in NYC and was looking at top design awarded products for consumers in general. The G4 15-inch iMac was right there, on display at MOMA as one of the top designs (so was the first version of the iPod too). I still would have rather waited for a version with higher processor and wider screen.
What I am somewhat concerned about ( but not losing sleep over it) is that a lot of Apples resources will now be going towards the manufacturing and support/repair of the new machines with the intel processors. At present, the logic board on my new (April 2005-new) Powerbook G4 (1.67 Mhz) no longer functions correctly and my Powerbook is in for repair. I have Apple Care so thats a good thing but its been in the shop for 3 weeks now and I called Apple Care today to find out whats up. The tech basically said we have been kind of overwhelmed with the transition to the new processors so it may take a while to repair. Maybe he didnt mean to make that kind of slip but you do have to wonder if Apple resources will be stretched during this transition.

I'd take that person's comment with a grain of salt.
The switch to Intel is taking resources away from other areas, sure. But having just completed a record setting quarter means everyone at Apple is probably stretched thin.
Still... 3 weeks is a long time to go without a computer. I wonder if anyone knows how you might prompt Apple to expedite the process?

I keep wondering why people are so pleased Apple is increasing it's market share.
Is it because people own stock in Apple, or beacause they think it will mean more programmes for the OS X?
Or is it something else?
I mean 4 per cent market share is a lot to me. I only use one computer. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
EDITED to say I don't mind the increasing market share. Didn't mean to come across that way...up or down i still use only one. I mean, if I was THE ONLY ONE, then, yeah, that would be a problem. But you guys are all still hanging with me, right? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think it's a fine name. Powerbook rolls of the tongue a little easier, but there's nothing wrong with the new name. At least it tells you exactly what the product is.
