?? Why AirPort Express Not Working ??

Hi,
Been looking up recent posts and have not found any solutions. (And have been very frustrated by how my usual "No problems with Apple" has failed.....)
Have:
iBook G3 600MHz OS 10.4.4
AirPort Card
AirPort Express
D-Link DSL-302G ADSL Ethernet/USB Modem
Am able to connect to broadband with ethernet cable.
About 9 months ago, was able to use my AirPort Card to access a network (without AirPort Express, just a normal router)
No Problems with setting up a new network on AirPort Express using AirPort SetUp Assistant (Ethernet from the modem to AirPort Express)
But even after repeatedly setting up the network, and turning AirPort on/off, have not been able to go online wireless. Diagnostics was not able to help me. A friend tried changing ISP but no success.
Any ideas (I know it will be something so simple....)
