I've been reading about the new Tiger 10.4 operating system and I'm thinking I want to upgrade.
Here's the thing-I don't know if it will work on my Powerbook G3. I have a 400mHz processor and 320 megs of RAM. I believe I have at least a 1G hard drive.
Is this a smart move? I'm just tired of not being able to have the newest software because I'm running 9.0.
Thanks,
Holli

I don't think you have the right mac to run OS X.4.x, unless you upgrade your ram and your HD. Maybe OsX.2.8. One gig HD is not an off to run OS X.

I was just told that I did by the people at the Mac store here in Denver.
So I know that I can run it, but I still don't know if it's a good idea.

Well, your processor is fast enough, and your ram is technically sufficient (although not if you want it to run well), but it sounds like your harddrive is not. Four gigs is the absolute minimum to actually get OS 10.4 installed, and that leaves no room for any of your files. I wouldn't recommend it on anything less than a 20 gig drive.

Even if you could get 10.0, you don't want it. 10.0 was the slowest, least capable, least secure, and buggiest version of OS X. You would hate it. And, if your goal is to use current software, you can't get there from 10.0 because most new software now requires 10.3 or later due to all of the feature and speed improvements since then. If you do this, go straight to 10.4. But you do need a bigger disk. They are not expensive. You can replace your internal hard disk with a 40GB drive for as low as $80 (labor not included), just make sure that if you have someone else install it that they can transfer all your data to the new disk.

Ah thanks for telling me that. I'll definately think about upgrading my hard drive. Any idea where I could get a 40GB hard drive (besides Ebay) for my laptop?

I put a 60GB drive in my PowerBook G3 500MHz, really glad I did.

Wow Holli, if you're using a G3, you're even worse off than I am right now! I know you love your Mac, but you'll be better off just buying a new computer if you want to make the jump from 9 to X. Buy an Intel Mac like the iMac (or wait for the Intel mini) and you will get all the hardware/software you need, all new, without 10 years of work logged on it (those fans and circuits do wear out after time).
Fwiw, I'm running 10.3.9 on my G4 450 PowerMac 768MB RAM and its painful to do much more than surf and check email anymore. Just buy a new Intel Mac and you'll be good to go for another 10 years.
