I was going to buy a PB G4 17" 1680x1050 screen resolution. I need because I sold my PB g4 15" to my sister...
Should i buy the PB g4 or the Mac Book Pro...
I read that has no FW 800, no super drive x8... seems that has less features than PB G4 17"...
Should I buy the PB G4... run with it 2 years and then will see what's on apple world....
thanks

What do you need to do on the PowerBook?
What applications do you use right now that you will continue to use.
Knowing this is rather important because whether or not a MacBook Pro will be a fit is determined for now on how you will use it and what applications you plan to use.
Welcome to the forums!
Also... please check through the other threads and the Macworld articles about differentiating between a PowerBook and MacBook Pro... that will give you lots of insight.

I used to have Office, Mysql, a bit of photoshop ... ftp, mail, bbedit,... on my Albook G4 15.2"
I think that now, the best chioce is a G4 17" fully loaded... same price as Mac Book Pro 1.87 fully loaded...
that may be a reason, why and "old" model has the same price as brand new model

Used to have? Did you sell them along with your 15" PowerBook? Buying new copies of those programs can add-up tremendously, especially as not all of them are Universal and will take hits running under emulation.
New copies of those programs will work fine, though, on a G4.

I have copies of that applications... Office 2004, Bbedit, Toast Titanium 7,... I have copies, orginal boxes...
will they work smooth...?
Do you think is a better option the iMac 20" ?
It has more features than Mac Book Pro, and it has to be a home desktop not for professional use...
Why is more powerfull? That's why I can't understand the new Apple Policy... That's why I'm thinking about purchasing the Powerbook G4 17"... I know that all my present applications will run just fine, smooth like they used to work on my PB G4 15.2" ...
Don't you think?
Do you think that I'm buying and old piece of hardware for the same amount as the new model MacBook pro?
So this is my doubt... but finally... I know I'll have to choose, because I need the computer urgently...
Will the G4 will be out dated next year?
thanks!!

hey all, i would definitly wait. tell you why
I just got a new powerbook 15" (the actual 5,8 model) like a few months ago. my first APPLE, and i loved it. but i have this problem that like every twenty minutes the sound (be it itunes, skype, vlc, quicktime whatever) starts a freakily LOUD stuttering echoing loop for a few seconds. it sounds scary.
If you want more info, and listen to the phenomena check out the apple forums.

literally thousands of people are having this (check the forum), but still nothing but radiosilence from Apple, does anyone here have this problem, and an idea to wake apple up so they'd fix it.
so i would definitly not buy the defective actual powerbook series (the actual 15" and 17" pb model)

i was in a similar situation a month ago before the MacBook was announced and i opted for the PowerBook instead of waiting for an Intel Mac.
here are a few things to consider that i learned when doing my research: if you need a notebook right now, your apps exceptionally well for years to come. so if you need one now, buy now. also, you mentioned considering an iMac and i say go for the Core Duo if you don't need the portability of a PowerBook or MacBook.
you sound like you need a computer relatively soon, so if you can't wait until mid to late february or beyond, go for the PB
