I just bought a Canon SD450 digital camera that can take movies along with still photos. When I download the movie clip into my computer, it plays as a Quick Time movie. When I load it into imovie it also plays as a "clip". I can't edit the clip in imovie. Do I have to buy QuickTime Pro to edit this file? I have the ability to edit it in the camera, but only to clip the beginning and end and not the stuff in between. I like using imovie to make DVD projects of stills etc. and have never used it for video before.
thanks,
frenchy

frenchy,
What do you mean by edit? As far as I'm aware, when you imported the avi file into iMovie, it should have converted it to DV footage. From there, drag the clip into the time line and then you should be able to edit it as if it were footage from any ordinary camcorder.
Keep in mind, the quality isn't going to be spectacular, but if you're just messing around, it's more than suitable.

Hi,
It doesn't convert to DV footage. First of all, I can't import it directly into iMovie cause the camera doesn't use a firewire port, but USB 2.0, and I found out from the camera specs. that the type of avi file it is is Motion Jpg./audio wave. So it loads into iPhoto automatically. It acts more like a still photo in iMovie than a video. That's why I can't edit it. But I will try again.
help,
frenchy

frenchy,
In your original post, you said that you imported it into iMovie, but in the second post, you say iPhoto. Either way, it doesn't matter.
At least with earlier versions of iMovie, you could import the video clips from digital still cameras into iMovie. iMovie would do the conversion from mpeg/avi/etc to DV. It takes a while, but after the import, you can manipulate the video just like any other video footage.
Here's what you do. Download the video clip using either iPhoto or Image Capture. Then, create a new iMovie project. Next, drag the video clip file onto the iMovie project clip pane. iMovie will start to convert the clip to DV. Viola!

in imove HD, I know there is an option to export into Quicktime and then save in a different format. Do you know what those formats are and will it work with regular QT or does it have to be the Pro version? Is there any file type that would be compatible with WMP which does have a Mac version?

I just got a Canon SD450 & encountered a problem bringing my .AVI files into iMovie. I would get an error message when I tried to import them into iMovie. I found my solution in the software that came with the camera. Here is what worked for me:
from Browser Window
Edit > Movie Edit
Click on Save tab in Movie Edit
Check button: Specify a save image type
Choose QuickTime Movie
Select Advanced Settings and choose: Make movie self contained
This produces a .MOV file
Import or drag this into iMovie
This solved the problem for me.

I shot a short avi video with my canon 620 and discovered it is rotated wrong. What can I do to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise?
thanks.
