os 10.4.3 at home on a G3- it has sound.
At work os 10.4.3 on a mini- no sound (it makes the "bong" at startup tho)- but when you go to the sys preferences, sound, the sound controlss on the mini are greyed out? Normal?

The Mac mini has a built-in speaker so it should be sound capable. What are your options under the Output tab? Internal speakers should be selected if you do not have external speakers attached. I have never heard the sound from a Mac minis built-in speaker, but from all reports, its sound is too teeny for any practical use anyway.

I've had the Mac mini... it does have a speaker and plays sound. It's rather faint, however, for playing music.

Make sure you have "internal speakers" selected in the Sound preferences instead of "Digital out".
