I have my old 40GB HD that i salvaged from my iBook G4 800, which i recovered and directly installed (no formatting or reinstallation) in a macAlly firewire/usb 2.0 (PHR-250CC) external case.
my goal is to be able to boot from the drive with my apps like i used to on my iBook, but so far i haven't been able to get it to boot.
i've run disk utility on the drive, but it hasn't found anything wrong.
one supplier here told me i won't be able to boot from a 5400rpm laptop drive, and that it'll have to be 7200rpm.
is this true?

Some people get their information from you know where! I boot from a firewire drive that has 5,400 RPM. This drive holds Tech Tool and Disk Warrior for emergency repairs.

Are you connecting the drive via the firewire or USB interface? Booting is only possible via firewire.

ok, it is connected via firewire, and the drive itself is the actual boot drive from the iBook (OSX 10.3.8). i merely removed it from the ibook straight to the enclosure, then hooked it up to my G4 via firewire. i then went to 'startup disk' and selected that particular drive.
it then booted from the external frive to the blue screen with the apple logo, and the spinning circle under it keeps spinning, but doesn't pull up the rest of the OS. i left it there for half an hour, and it was still stuck on the blue screen w/ logo & circular spinning icon.
does this help?

What kind of Mac are you trying to boot with this drive?
