Here's my question.
In iPhoto5, I sort my library with the Roll Numbers listed. Every time I download pictures off of my camera, the next Roll Number is used. However, there are times where I delete a whole roll for whatever reason, and now there are gaps in the numbering system. It's easy enough to rename the rolls so that they are sequential, but iPhoto still remembers the old number and the next imported roll needs to be renamed, and so on and so on.
Is it possible to get iPhoto to reset the roll numbering? I'm thinking that the number is stored in some XML file and can be edited. Anyone have an answer?
Thanks.

I don't have iPhoto 5, but in iPhoto 4, you can change the date and the roll number by highlighting "Photo Library" and then setting View->Arrange Photos->by film roll. Now in the main window click on the roll you want to modify (at the film icon and it will also highlight all photos in that roll). In the lower left you will see the Title: Roll #, change this to whatever you wish. Same for the date. BTW you can have duplicate roll numbers, but the rolls are listed in date order. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
That's the same way that it works in iPhoto5. What I was asking about was in reference to resetting the roll numbers. Here's an example.
I have a fresh iPhoto Library. The first batch of photos I import is called "Roll 1". The next batch is called "Roll 2", and so on. Now, let's say that I've deleted a bunch of Rolls or maybe I've combined a few rolls. So where I used to have, let's say, 10 rolls, I only have 7 rolls. So I renumber the rolls from "Roll 1" to "Roll 7". Here's where the problem lies, the next batch of photos that are imported will be "Roll 11". I'd like a way to have iPhoto pick up the last sequential roll number so that it would be labelled as "Roll 8".
I know that it's kinda anal to be bothered by this, but hey, that's me.
Thanks.

Sorry about that. Now that I understand what you want, I imagine that resetting the roll numbers, including compressing and reassigning numbers to the database, would lead to many problems in the integrity of iPhoto. That's probably why it is not openly available. Most likely the original roll numbers are simply incremented with each import and has little or nothing to do with the designation appearing on the screen (which allows redesignating).

I found one way to reset the roll numbering in iPhoto 6, but, first, I want to warn anyone who follows my directions that I did this with an empty libary. I don't know what effect this might have on an existing, populated Library, so I strongly suggest that you back up your photos before doing the reset.

    [*]Quit iPhoto.
[*]Go into your iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder.
    [*]Delete the file: Library6.iPhoto.
[*]Open iPhoto and reimport your photos.
[/list]...the elusive roll #1 again at last
