ok.. i used ChangeShortName for grins.
this on my 1.8DP powermac G5.
now I have discovered a bit of a problem.
everything with the exception of Zinio.
It seems there is a problem with permission to view regardless of what I did or do.
couldn't download the new reader as it gave me errors as well.
fortunately, I cloned previously on an external.
being i read my last three issues of Macworld on the laptop, I haven't noticed the error.
I have weekly clones internal on the G5, but...
was wondering if i just re-installed on one of the drives and used Migration Assistant.app if it would pull this "feature" in with it or if the short name discrepancies will correct with info I enter at startup of the newly reformatted drive?
it's not a problem just re-doing the system.. it's just everything else works so dadgum well and I haven't had a lick of problems until i found this one.
thoughts anyone?

heh.. that might help with the frustration.. but Derik.. I am really not very frustrated. it's an easy fix with a bit of importing back and forth..
but as I am fortunate enough to have multiple disks.. how about those that run the script and only have the one internal.
maybe we should go ahead and beat him for those users /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
anyway, if anyone has any thoughts as to a fix without the back and forth on my disks.. i would love to hear.

Hey Nuke,
I would have been one of those with one internal drive and NOT backed up. (Yes, I know)
I had downloaded the application, was ready to hit the button then I thought, Peter take notice of the disclaimer that it could cause problems.
So my short name is my first name and half of my surname. It annoys me but I don't know enough if I had screwed it up.
Sorry it didn't work for you, maybe the creator will write to you.
Peter

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner; I've been on paternity leave and just today made my way back to the forums
As I understand you, you changed your short username and everything works except Zinio reader? It won't let you view magazines?
This is the first report I've heard of ChangeShortName causing a problem like this; that said, Zinio is not my favorite app -- I've had the same problem in the past without even changing my username. I eventually fixed it by going to the Zinio site and follow the procedure for re-authorizing my computer:

1. Find the ContentGuard folder. It can be found in the following folder: Users > Library > Preferences
2. Delete the CGGuardLib file in this folder.
After you delete the licenses, you should be able to open the Zinio Reader and view your publications without difficulty.

Let me know if this helps!

Off topic, but congrats Dan! How's about a picture of you with the baby for Macuser?

congrats are in order i presume?
and hope mum and child are okie dokie.
yes, Zinio was the only app i ran into problems with.
it actually ran before, it just wouldn't let me update, download, or read any new Magazines after the shortnamechange.
and nope deleting CGGuardLib didn't help. did that some time back.
I couldn't even get the Zinio installer to work again.
tells me something somewhere.. probably a cache, wasn't clean.
so
and you are going to love this.
you would think CCC would be 100%
it's not.
I took another drive i had and CCC'd to it.
I can't remember, but I can look back if you really want to know exactly what wasn't CCC'd, (defaults).
but the newly CCC'd bootable drive took the reader installer just fine and I went to Zinio and authorized the drive.
total time was about 45 minutes.
which was about 3 hours less than the time I spent working trying to get Zinio to run.
shortname and everything else is perfect. and I have tried each and every app since the clone.
so now I am running back to 100% from my primary drive that i cloned the working model to.
I have the list of what wasn't cloned, one afternoon I shall dig thru it and see what may have caused it.
still a neat little app... and it shouldn't have done that from what i could tell.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I've apparently been the one taking all the pictures -- we noticed this weekend that there are very few with me actually in them! (Most of those are of the "look, we've been up 48 hours straight!" variety ) I'll let you know when we get some presentable ones.

Back on topic, Macnuke, glad you got the issue fixed. I'll have to do some experimenting to see if I can replicate the problem over here.
