Hello!
I have 2 computers:
A 9 month old 15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.5, and an old iMac G3 DV (400mhz, System 9.2.2).
I have a bunch of files i'd like to share between computers. Right now, that requires either
a. restarting the iMac in FW Target mode, then restarting it again to use it as a computer, or
b. Using my 128 meg USB jump drive. 128 isn't that much to begin with, and then it's USB 1.1...
However:
Both computers are linked to my dorm's LAN line, via ethernet. I can also link the two together via airport computer-to-computer network, although it's much slower than the ethernet connection (original Airport card in the iMac).
I would like to share files (such as photos, homemade movies, and office docs) between the two. I know that in both OS 9 and X you can link two computerrs via personal file sharing (Tiger name, anyway), as long as they are the same OS - that is, i've found ways to link an OS 9 mac to another OS 9 mac, and a mac running X to another mac with X, but never between 9 and 10.
Since both computers are always linked to the network (when i'm at home, anyway), it's a very convient system. If i could get this to work, i'd save quite a bit of time.
The other snag is that I want to make sure that no one else can intercept my files, or send anything to me. (this trojan thing has me a little spooked) How do you securely link just two computers on such a network? Should i simply connect an ethernet cable/crossover cable directly between the two?
Oh: I know they can talk directly to one another: I have my USB printer (attached to my PB) networked so that my iMac can print without the cable-shuffle.
Thanks,
Dan

If you have personal file sharing enabled (on both ) you should be able to login from either end as admin and transfer pretty much anything you wish from either side - much like target disk mode but slower.
I would make sure you turn off personal file sharing on both ends when you don't need to transfer files on that kind of network.
