Installing X.11

My girlfriedn needs to install X.11 on her iBook so that she can run SAS at home from the University server. The problem is that I cannot for the life of me find a way to install the software without re-installing the OS. The Developer Tools has an installer for X11SDK, but she does not need the software development kit. I did attempt to install the X11SDK, but after it indicated that it was successfully installed, no new application appeared in her Applications folder. What am I missing here?

It should be on your system install disk(s), in the folder with the "extras" (classic and all that stuff - sorry I can't be more specific, I don't have access to my system DVD right now). The SDK is not a stand alone application - it just provides some support for advanced X11 program calls.
P.S. In Tiger, X11.app will be in your Utilities folder, not Applications.

Her install discs do not appear to have an Extras folder. I installed disc 2 first, as that was where the Classic install was when I installed Classic on my Power Mac G5. Her directory for the second disc only has a Read Me file about installing OS X. When I inserted the first CD, it has an icon called Install Bundled Software Only, but X11 and Classic are not a part of that install package.

I downloaded X11 from Apple's site & installed it on my G4 with Panther.

Hi
It's in DVD / CD name/System/Installation/Packages and called X11User.pkg I think, there may be a hidden folder somewhere in there but I can't recall.
However, so you don't have to dig for it, I have a copy from a 10.4.0 retail Mac OS X Tiger DVD on my iDisk...
http://homepage.mac....X11User.pkg.zip (~43MB)
I put this up some time ago for someone over at Spymac looking for it.

nice of you to post that Mac.
for your reference tho.
X11 is located easiest by just popping in your Tiger DVD and you can see the X11 folder right there with the installer in it.
as it's just an application to install, no need for booting from the DVD to get it.

Hi
On my iMac's Install Disc 1, you can install it using the Optional Installs.mpkg located at the root of the DVD but that requires you to install all of the applications ( iCal, Safari, X11, ... ) and you can't just do one. Though, the package is in the directory I specified earlier and it has no hidden folders, so just follow the path and you'll be fine.
It appears to be nearly the exact same for the retail Tiger DVD. The only difference is you can choose to remove X11 from the list of applications in the Optional Installs package but you still can't just install X11.

Her iBook came with an OS X Tiger DVD and two Tiger CDs. None of the discs have an X11 folder on them that I saw. I just checked my install discs and I found the X11 install buried in a package called Optional Installs on Disc 1, but there is no X11 folder to be found on either CD. (Ironically, my pro-level Power Mac did not include with an OS X DVD with the developer tools, but her consumer-level iBook did.) Anyway, I do not recall seeing such a package on her Install Disc 1. I will have her check.macknuke wrote:

I saw this after I wrote my response for macnuke and that is pretty much the case on my install discs also. When I opened the package the installer did allow me to select individual apps for installation, but I had already installed X.11 on my Mac when I re-installed OS X in order to partition my hard drives after first getting it home because I knew I would need it for my work.MacCheetah3 wrote:

Thanks for the info guys. I will have to have her check her CDs for the Optional Installs package.
