Four months ago, I bought the top-of-the-line iBook, just days after the 700mhz speed bump. Today, as the new Apple portables were being announced, I couldn't help but feel cheated that a machine I payed about $2,000 for just 16 weeks ago would be worth the equivalent of a $1,299 iBook with a smaller screen today. If you have any comments or suggestions for me, or your own story, feel free to post in this thread. If not, post in this thread anyway because its fun.

Are you saying that Apple shouldn't upgrade at all? Or have fewer and less substantial updates?

Welcome to the computer world... if you're not growing you're dying.

I think that upgrades should be announced beforehand so that, say, someone who is interested in buying a computer doesn't buy one the day before the upgrades come out. While people might not buy computers right before the update is announced, Apple would keep more loyal customers.

Yea, you're right. I feel cheated that the 64mb of RAM I bought in 1996 cost me $1,000!

What do you want Apple to do, stop selling what they have a month prior to new machine introductions? As a consumer, I've always thought it wise to do a little research before a major purchase - it's not Apple's fault you didn't do your homework.

I know it sucks but you really can't blame anyone but yourself.

If someone did a minor amount of research they would have read one of the 10 websites on my favorites list that reported a upgrade on the portables line-up last week. Everyone knew it was coming.
Dell updates its computers a lot faster then Apple. Its just that the revisions are so small no one realizes its happened. Unlike Apple which has awesome revisions every few months that gets the community pumped.

I would also like to add that Apple is pretty good about upgrading what people bought if a new revision comes out. My friend bought an iBook a day before the 700mhz revisions came out and they bumped his purchase up to an equivalent model. Of course his purchase hadn't been shipped yet, thats an important distinction since i doubt apple would send a new unit to your house to replace an outdated one :-P

If Apple stops updating their spec on their machines, they will lose competitive edge, and will go bankrupt. In fact, Apple's product cycle is painfully slower than that of other PC companies, and getting rather behind in hardware spec these days. Which is part of the reason of stagnance of Apple's share in computing world today. They actually need to accelerate their cycle, not slow down. And, 4 month in computing world is a very long time.

Ha! I got my iBook only a few weeks ago, and I don't feel cheated one tiny bit. These kinds of things are the beauty of the computer world... the fact that prices are constantly dropping dramatically. Be thankful that prices do drop, then enjoy your laptop.

If you have them announce that they plan to upgrade in a few days or weeks or whatever, you still get the same thing. "But I just bought my iBook, and now they tell me they're gonna upgrade!". Which, of course eventually leads to, "We just updated out laptops. We plan to do so in a few months, in case you were wondering..."

Look at this way, you're better off by purchasing your iBook days after the release then few days before the new upgraded iBook's release.

Hi
But you have to remember soemthing. You bought it when you did because you believed, understood, researched, whatever, that it would be able to do what you wanted. That doesn't change when a new revision is released. The same thing happens for ANYTHING. There are always new TV's, VCR's, medicines, software, food, whatever. You could complain 24/7 if that was the subject of the complaint.

Yeah, really. I hate it when people bitch about how they just bought their computer (in this case, 4 months ago) and now the product like is being updated. These are the same people that would complain about Apple never updating their line, or are behind in hardware.

Also, if you don't like it, either stop using computers or do what I do: sell my computer on ebay every time a new one comes out, and use the money towards the new one. images/icons/grin.gif
