Are you insane, man? This would totally blow their profits in the meantime! That is the exact reason apple doesn't release all of its products at macworld, because people expect it to be release then, and they put off purchases. And, for the 'loyal customers' bit, give up that old saw. Apple is not your friend. It doesn't try to be
In a healthy open market, this should be easily done. Over four month of product cycle, form the day a new computer is released till it is replaced by another one, the value of the product declines in a gentle slope everyday. When the product is competing with other products from other companies, the price will need to be adjusted even within the four month period, which we alwyas see in PC market. For example, Dell's computer's price drops very rapidly. You get an advert from DELL, and call them up, and they usually tells you either they have a faster one in the same price, or the price has already been lowered. That is not at all the case with Apple. Their way of running business is to keep the price 'exactlly' at the point where it was released for the whole duration of product's life. As a result, what happens towards the end of each product cycle is that their products is rather over priced even within the closed Apple society. So when a new line of computers are released, people who bought their system towards the end alwyas feel rather 'cheated'. It is not customer's fault they feel that way though, it is just the way how Apple treats their customers.
On the side notte, I love computer industry, and to me, speed is everything. I do not care how quickly my dual G4 800 may loose its edge. Actually I am rather frustrated that current speed limit of 1.25GHZ is unacceptably low, and if they continue thier current slow pace of speed increase, I may never find the computer to upgrade, ever. ( I am waiting for dual 2GHZ)
