Are you insane, man? This would totally blow their profits in the meantime! That is the exact reason apple doesn't release all of its products at macworld, because people expect it to be release then, and they put off purchases. And, for the 'loyal customers' bit, give up that old saw. Apple is not your friend. It doesn't try to be

In a healthy open market, this should be easily done. Over four month of product cycle, form the day a new computer is released till it is replaced by another one, the value of the product declines in a gentle slope everyday. When the product is competing with other products from other companies, the price will need to be adjusted even within the four month period, which we alwyas see in PC market. For example, Dell's computer's price drops very rapidly. You get an advert from DELL, and call them up, and they usually tells you either they have a faster one in the same price, or the price has already been lowered. That is not at all the case with Apple. Their way of running business is to keep the price 'exactlly' at the point where it was released for the whole duration of product's life. As a result, what happens towards the end of each product cycle is that their products is rather over priced even within the closed Apple society. So when a new line of computers are released, people who bought their system towards the end alwyas feel rather 'cheated'. It is not customer's fault they feel that way though, it is just the way how Apple treats their customers.

On the side notte, I love computer industry, and to me, speed is everything. I do not care how quickly my dual G4 800 may loose its edge. Actually I am rather frustrated that current speed limit of 1.25GHZ is unacceptably low, and if they continue thier current slow pace of speed increase, I may never find the computer to upgrade, ever. ( I am waiting for dual 2GHZ)

Welcome to the world of computers.

It happens all the time. Technology marches on. Nothing you can do about it.

But you can look before you buy.

Rumors were abounding here, and on the rumor sites, about November 6th. You should always take a look around. And don't buy before a Macworld Expo.

Here's my $0.02

I don't really think you should feel cheated. The way i look at it is there's always going to be something faster coming out. As long as it does the job then you should be happy about it! images/icons/wink.gif

It's a great computer, don't get me wrong. But if they don't find a way for me to upgrade (even at a cost) the "combo" drive with a "superdrive" then I am really going to regret the switch I made to Apple. It wasn't clear to me when I purchased it that the "combo" drive didn't burn DVD's. What the heck is the sense of putting iMovie on there if the HD won't even hold a movie of decent length? So I can use my digital camcorder to create .MOV files that are too big to save, email or for the web? Oh I know, so I can save it back to my camcorder with titles...big whoop.

I'm sorry, this is the stupidest thing I have read in a long time.

You are saying that you do not have the reading comprehension to look at Apple's description of the combo drive, and know that it doesn't burn DVDs? Did you even LOOK at any information on your PowerBook?

If you can't figure out a use for iMovie without a SuperDrive, that's your own damn fault.

You can use it to create a slide show to burn to a CD as a QuickTime movie. You can create a movie that you can watch on your TV using the PowerBook's S-Video out port.

Seem like pretty decent things to me. Do some research next time.

You can also buy an external DVD burner or Firewire drive.

caveat emptor......let the buyer beware. Its as old as ancient Rome (the saying that is). Any way, I guess I could have used the same logic when Apple came out with the 17inch FP imac (only had my 15inch 4 months) but i like the 15 inch and have no regreats. Kind of curious about the ibook now. I may go for one the mid lines. It was a good upgrade.

This is exactly why people who say, "Just buy it when you need it, don't worry about what's around the corner." are flat out wrong. There is definitely a "wrong" time to buy and that is what this poster experienced. Too bad Apple makes it so difficult to predict what is on the horizon. How else can you say it but that recent buyers kind of got screwed.

Guys...guys...

Usually everyone knows when therea are updates comming out (boards are full of rumors that something will be released soon, and usually within a month there are updates). If you can wait, wait. If you need new mac then don't worry about it and buy it. I bought my TiBook (667 DVI) two months ago, and i knew soon they would be updated, do i regret it? Absolutelly no. It's great machine that will last me untill G5 PowerBooks are out. What 'real' difference it makes if you have old 800 or new 1000 ? or new video card? Unless you really need all that speed (how many of us are really using their computers to their full potential?) you have nothing to worry about. Warcraft would run better on new PB, big deal.... or i have to wait 25 seconds instead of 19 for some operation to complete,
give me a break.

I wish though apple would offer some kind of SuperDrive upgrade program (like they did before with combo drives) as many users would benefit from this.

This is why I drive a 12 year old car. I just know that as soon as I buy a new car, there will be a new one out in like months. You can't trust those auto people either!

anybody else notice that the original poster said "4 months," not "4 weeks?" Come on, that's gotta be around... late June, July-sh. At the time, Those iBooks had only been out about 2 months- why are you complaining? If people like you had your way, Apple would still be producing Mac Classics, and selling them for $1,000. But of course, the industry is moving forward- I'd actually be happy if Apple could manage 4-month product cycles- they update in far less time in the PC world.
Nobody's gonna refund your money after four months- very few people are gonna take you seriously if you're pissed that you're computer isn't as valuable as it was 3 days ago- deal with it. Your computer still does what it did when you bought it, and isn't that why you bought the computer in the first place?

I was looking at the new 800 mhz ibook specs and wondering how significant would the performance be versus the older 700mhz model. Anyone who has one of the new ones how does quartz extreme run now that they have 32mb vid cards...

Dave you lost me when you said "..It wasnt clear..(difference between super & combo drive).."

It wasnt clear to me either by the labels terms. The term "combo" sound better than 'super". IMO

I researched the product at length and discovered the nomenclature misnomer.

Im rather surprised you posted about this. Clearly it was your misunderstanding. happens.

Focus on a great product you purchased. It's just a computer...not a house.
