Is there a way to create a PDF with external, working, clickable hyperlinks that work with Preview?
I am using MS Word X. It isn't creating the clickable hyperlinks for Preview they DO show up and work in Adobe Reader, but not in Preview, which I think is very odd.
Here's what I've been doing I create my doc in Word X, then:
1. I open a NEW document page.
2. I type in a hyperlink http://www.webpage.com/
3. I Print --> PDF --> Save as PDF...
4. Open it in Preview.
5. No clickable hyperlink. It's blue, underlined... but not clickable.
Preview seems to work for embedded hyperlinks from sources OTHER than my own creation (so I know it DOES open hyperlinks).
I also tried this with Pages, but with no luck.
Thanks...
Bryan

I do this in [full version of] Acrobat 5.0.5 in OS 9.2.2.
1. Distill your Word file to .pdf. It doesn't matter how you do this.
2. Open the file in Acrobat.
3. On the toolbar is an icon for linking. Select the icon.
4. Draw an invisible rectangle over the hyperlink, or anything else you want to have hyperlinked, such as someone's name.
5. Click on ACTION and select Worldwide Web Link.
6. Click on EDIT URL, then type in your URL or E-mail address. Click Okay.
7. Save your work and quit. You've done what you want done.

What is preferred is the PDF generation process respecting the live links already in Word, the way it works in Windows. Adding them in Acrobat isn't realistic when there are many links in the Word document, and even more unrealistic if you edit the Word doc later and generate a new PDF. If you have to add the links in Acrobat, that means if your Word edits shifted the text around, you have to edit every link in Acrobat every time you update the Word doc - that is no fun.

The publishers don't use Word to create the eBook files. There are a number of programs designed specifically for creating eBooks. Here's one list I found.

How do you do this, using Acrobat or Distiller 5.0.5, or Word 2000? I find nothing obvious in the documentation for your elegant solution.

(This is in Windows) If you have the Acrobat toolbar installed in Word then when you click the Adobe PDF menu you can select Change Conversion Settings... and there are four tabs of options, including which hyperlinks you want to carry over into the PDF. This is in Word 2002 and Acrobat 6 which is what I have on my Windows box. I don't know what this looks like in other versions. Maybe you're not seeing it because your versions are different.
