I had a similar problem upgrading from 10.3.3 to 10.3.4 with the delta updater way back when. On the sage advice of an experienced user, I ran the 10.3.4 combo updater over the 10.3.4 installation and the problem was resolved.
The combo contains all the updates after the integer upgrade and probably resolves any possible conflicts from earlier updates. However it works, it solved my similar problem and I've used combo updaters ever since.

For a number of days now, I have been using YASU, OnyX as well as letting the System cleanup overnight and yet kernel panic is a daily (early morning) occurrence. I've ordered Disk Warrior and will use it as soon as I get it. As to the last suggestion of running the 10.4.5 combo updater over the 10.4.5 installation on my system, what about the two Security Updates I've installed (see my first post)? I'm afraid to confuse things even further and leave myself with the only option of re-installing the OS. Any logic to that?

I can't remember if I faced that issue when I had the problem with Panther. I do know I tried many other things over several weeks before I got the advice on running the combo and that worked. You should consider that having to restart your system every day after a kernel panic is probably not doing it much good anyway. I would run the 10.4.5 combo then reinstall the security updates. However, it's your system so the call is yours.
Good luck.

I am curious - when you downloaded the update the version on the internet, does it ever interrupted in the middle of processing?
If yes, (that's unfortunate) when it happens to you, do not restart/shutdown it. Just ignore that window - You go on Apple's website to download it instead of "Software Update..." on your OS. After that, you restart it so that it will be safe. I assume that it was too late so you might want to download it on the Apple website now. For the next update version, you click the Software Update to see what happens.
(Do you ever use the Apple's Disk Utility? I believe that you should download the update version on the Apple's website first, then use the Disk Utility to straight things out.)

I don't recall if I had any interruptions during the downloads of either the OS 10.4.5 or the two security updates applied shortly thereafter. I always use DU before and after an update and I get the updates from Apple's website or through Software Update.
My question is - can I safely reapply and overlay 10.4.5 over what's on my system?
