In the July 05 issue Christopher Breen responded to a question about re-applying the sound check process to music in your itunes library. His reponse is to move the itunes music library xml file to the desktop & then reimport it again. I'm not sure if this solves the problem. When the original sound adjustment was done doesn't iTunes tag the song with the volume information? If this is the case wouldn't you have to remove the info individually from the tags of each song as well as doing what Christopher suggested?

Essentially what you're doing is this:
Exporting your playlists as XML files so that you can then rebuild them later.
Then clear out your iTunes library and reimport the music in it (obviously, you don't want to trash the music files, just get them out of the library). So, select 'em, delete 'em so the library is empty, but, when iTunes asks, DON'T put them in the trash. Then File > Add to Library or drag 'em all into iTunes.
When you do this, the tag information that tells Sound Check to do its thing is reset to 0. At this point you can switch Sound Check on and have it try again or just leave it off.
And yes, any tracks on your iPod will continue to have Sound Check tags enabled until you resync the iPod with your current iTunes library (the one with the new Sound Check settings).

Chris, thanks for your quick response. I understand everything you're saying but I think you're wrong when you say the following:
"When you do this, the tag information that tells Sound Check to do its thing is reset to 0. At this point you can switch Sound Check on and have it try again or just leave it off."
Using MP3 Rage to view mp3 tags I've noticed iTunes stores numbered tags (invisible when viewed within iTunes) in the comment field. I think some of the numbers in the tag respond to the sound adjustment iTunes did when first importing the song. These numbers do not go away after deleting music files from within iTunes. What I've noticed is the following. In order to get rid of a sound adjustment entirely you must remove the iTunes music library.xml and iTunes library as you have said, but then using an mp3 tag editor (such as mp3 rage) remove the numbers in the comment field. Then you can import the iTunes music library.xml & then add the tag edited songs into itunes. If you have the sound check on iTunes will perform a sound adjustment. What I would like to know is if there is any software out there that does a batch removal of all the iTunes sound adjustment tags?
Thanks again for your quick response,
Jimmy

I see what you mean. I've found a utility for Windows that does it -- foobar2000. Foobar2000 can delete the contents of the comment field that contains the hex, which adjusts the Sound Check stuff. I haven't found a Mac utility that does that. With Media Rage you can batch edit the Comments field, but, as far as I can tell, it can't pinpoint that hex data and batch remove it.
