Has anyone else here done the update and had their iPod immediately freak out and die? I have done every thing I could find on Apple's support sight and put my iPod in diagnostic mode and run every test there (it passed every last one) yet when I plug my iPod into my iBook via either firewire or USB, it freaks out and locks up my iTunes and then refuses to unmount requiring the whole thing to be reset once again.
Has anyone else experienced problems after doing the update, the one with the volume control?
And of course my AppleCare just expired on the unit about a month ago!!!

That's the strange part. I still have the previous 4 iPod updater's on my computer and get the same result with each. It restores the iPod and then tells me to plug it in to a wall socket to reset and does that fine. I run all the diagnostics on the iPod and everything is fine and dandy. I plug the iPod into my iBook to put my music back on it and it opens iTunes then crashes iTunes and the iPod goes back to flashing error icons at me, the folder the unhappy iPod, the battery. I can unplug it, reset it with the menu and select buttons and run the restore (any of the ones I have) and get it all working fine but then just as soon as I plug it in and iTunes launches it crashes again.
I tried to use the installer from the original cd that came with it but when I try to install that I get a message about can't install because I need some Mac network update but no details beyond that.

If you can, try plugging it into another computer. That will give you some idea if the problem is with the iPod or with some setting on your Mac.
If you can't do that, try creating a new user account and plugging the iPod into your Mac. If it behaves properly with that new account, something is mucked up in your regular user account.

I reset the iPod and put it in disk mode. Plugged it in to my eMac this time instead of my iBook and it has the same behavior. Locks up the updater when I try to restore from any version of software to include the one on the disk that came with it.
I tried using my Disk Utility to verify the disk and get this error: Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
Any ideas?

No, I don't have Disk Warrior. I think I will just give up and use this as the excuse to finally get an iPod with video. Thank you for all the advice trying to help me, but I think I have lost the battle on this one.
Maybe some day I will just send it to Apple and have them take a look at it and maybe salvage it as a backup drive.
As someone who wouldn't own a Mac without AppleCare, I can't believe I was dumb enough not to have it on my iPod. I thought that the year for $59 sounded expensive compared to the risk but guess I learned my lesson on that!! Buy the AppleCare kiddies!!!
