I was wondering what some of the best Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs there are for macs. I just got my MBP and i want to make sure it remains and runs flawlessly.

there is no spyware for macs.
I read there was one or two pieces of malware that didn't seem to work either, so my money says don't get any.
if you are running many PPC apps that require Rosetta, that will slow you.
how much RAM do you have in there?
and do you let the OS clean itself running crons?
unfortunately, some of the best means of maintaining your Mac are still PPC and not intel native.. so they won't work on the MBP.
which is why I am holding off on my purchase.
if you were running a PPC model, i would say get YASU and DiskWarrior.
perhaps another with an intel Mac can recommend a good 3rd party util.
but the antivirus apps tear up the PPC, I would hate to see what happened to a Mac running it under rosetta.

if you don't want to learn the terminal...
Cocktail can be downloaded and is intel native.
do NOT just download and run it.
read the directions and pay attention to them.
it will do what you need to help your system out and get it back up to speed and keep it there.
but do read the manual please.
otherwise you will end up back here asking how to fix things that could easily be avoided.
and good to hear you have RAM on the way. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh no, the dreaded "beachball of doom" virus. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Actually AV software causes more beachballs then they prevent. I suspect some other app is hogging your computers resources. Run Activity Monitor to see what is running.

Hi,
You could install Anacron to automatically run your cron scripts when your MB is on.

Two questions,
Does OSX automatically run cron's at some point?
If not, Can you use Automator's run shell script to execute cron's?

System cron scripts run automatically, as long as the computer is on, and not in sleep mode, at the scheduled time.
System cron tasks are actually handled by launchd in OS X Tiger, and the control scripts (plist files) which designate the times, dates, etc for the periodic scripts can be found in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons. They can be edited (eg. rescheduled) by root (using sudo) with any text editor.

Found them - daily, weekly, monthly. I thought that I read somewhere that Tiger handled cron's automatically.
Now I know exactly how, thanks.
