Howdy, I'm wondering if you can boot a Mac from a Firewire hard drive or CD drive? TIA.

Maybe not in all cases but it works fine for me with my 2 firewire HDs. Just install a system on your external HD and give it a try.

That should be no problem as long as there is a bootable OS on it.

To boot from any partition with an OS on it just go into system preferences=>startup disk and select the disk you want. Then restart.

Should you ever need to restart from an external FW HD because your mac won't start up, you can hook it up and start the mac while holding down the option key. A menu should pop up and you can select the partition to start from.

To start from a CD is even easier. You can either go through system prefernces, or hold down the C key while restarting.

I wonder if a Windows box can boot from a FireWire drive...anyone try it? Maybe a MAC can only do this.

steveSNJ, most of us do favor Macs here, but take your hard line windows position elsewhere. My windows xp machine does boot off a firewire hard drive. Kick that attitude to the curb (shut up zach).
