AARRRRGGGHHH!!!!! Looks like Lucy just pulled the football out from in front of me.
If it hadn't been for my G3 iBook dying on me in mid-feb, I'd've been all over this monster like stink on a pig. Not that I'm not happy with my 15" MBP. Just would've been nice to have had the extra screen space.

That would mean absolutely nothing unless it could tell you whether the local signal was a) unencrypted, b) free, and c) public.
I was trying to not write a book as I do agree that the LEDs would be best if they also indicated the type of signal. But you know what? Something is better than nothing. If on the first run out, they only told me that there was a signal, that would be better than we have today. Ya, I'd like a Green for unencrypted, and a Red for WEP, or some such identifier, but if I saw no LEDs with the simplest implementation, I could then be smart enough to not even try to open it up and see what's available. I don't ask for the moon, just at least what Dell will give me.

I am all for pushing innovation along but getting rid of the internal modem is pushing way too far ahead. European hotels have only just standardised their room telephones to RJ-11. Wi-Fi is still very intermittent. Fine in large cities like Paris, Rome, London but anywhere else, forget it.

Three questions:
1) what's the little hole/port/thing on the front of the MacBook Pro to the left of the catch?
2) are the meshes to either side of the keyboard speakers?
3) can Apple Remotes be used to control things other than Front Row/iTunes/what Apple says they're for (does everything have to be controlled through Front Row)?

I was so hoping for broadband cards integrated as an option so I could connect via CDMA to my cell carrier.

Useful for a tiny percentage of Americans. The rest of the world either doesn't care about having internet access every second, or uses Bluetooth and 3G GPRS to get it.

I'm sorry, I still see those things as an expensive joke.

Who isn't using SmartCards to transfer data to phones and cameras?

Well, I use Bluetooth for my phone, and USB for my camera. I don't want to have eight different media slots making my laptop look ugly. Oh, you mean you were only going to support one of Compact Flash / SD / Memory Stick? And leave everyone else annoyed? That'd be a smart move from Apple.

And what about the external LED to indicate WiFi access without opening the lid or turning it on?

Why not spend thirty dollars on a decent wifi detector, and save your battery life (and having to wave your far more expensive laptop about)? I also don't see the minimalists at Apple condoning more than one LED per machine.

None of this stuff is not already shipping by Dell.

Dell also ship vast, overweight 17" "desktop replacements" that need weightlifters to carry, and I'd rather not see Apple copying that trend. (Although their tiny rebadged Samsungs aren't quite so easy to dismiss.)
Anyway, just to point out that your shopping list of items isn't anywhere near universally wanted (or needed).

Great laptop, but something is missing to be our choice:
- At least two eSATA ports. None in the machine.
- At least two FW 800 ports. Only one in the machine.
- At least two FW 400 ports. Only one in the machine.
- At least four USB 2 ports. Only three in the machine.

In response to my desire for an integrated broadband card:
As for your belief that Biometric Fingerprint Readers are a joke, they are the more secure than any other option available on the Mac at this time. Several of my clients need more security than they have today. What would you recommend for a walk up to a computer and instantaneously get access method? They don't want to have to enter passwords as they are moving from computer to computer (Doctors going from patient to patient in examining rooms). I'm thinking about proximity sensors but they are not adjustable as I'd like since the examining rooms are so close together. Your answer is... ? (Don't put down a technology just because you don't need it. The government has been requireing this technology for many years and has been purchasing it from Dell. They've just now allowed the public to add it as an option. Apple is still locked out of those government sales because Apple does not have the option.) Best not to be so narrow minded.
You pooh pooh smartcard reader. My piano uses SmartCard, my GPS uses SmartCard, my phone uses SmartCard, my cameral uses SmartCard. Do I really want to have to carry cables as well? Why not just pop it out and pop it in and not carry a cable? Not everything does Bluetooth, especially on the phone with the phone companies locking us out and my piano people fearing piracy. Think outside your box.

With Verizon selling the service, and Dell offering the card internally, I'm going to guess that they know something more about the demand for the product. It has nothing to do with access every second but rather speed of the connection. Is your connection speed as fast as you want it? Bluetooth has nothing to do with this as you are only using Bluetooth to connect from your phone to the computer. And the 3G GPRS is certainly no comparison in speed but is great when you don't have other options like we have today with broadband speeds.Useful for a tiny percentage of Americans.
