At least the bomb to be dropped at E3 will overshadow this.

Bomb? She's a terrorist! Get her!

Maybe they were inspired by the French "Oui." Or golfer Michelle Wie. Or just "Whee!" But I sure hope they re-rechristen this console.

Here in England, 'wee' means the same as the american word 'pee'.
This is going to be hilarious for kids in the UK.

I've heard they are going to simultaneously release a custom stand for the console. It's going to be called the "Luu" (pronounced "loo").
British kids will be told, "Remember, kids, always put your Wii in the Luu!"
Nevertheless, the badness of the Wii name doesn't even come close to the all-time worst product name: Trojan condoms. For those of you unfamiliar with Classical history, the Greeks and the Trojans (citizens of Troy) had a war that was raging for 10 years. The Greeks offered the Trojans a gift of an enormous wooden horse. Once the Trojans allowed the horse to penetrate the walls of the city, the horse burst open and hordes of Greeks spilled out. Is this the kind of imagery you want to be associated with your condom?

"Wii," "Revolution," whatever. You know what most people are going to call it?
A "Nintendo."

That name is SO BAD, it's great!
Gaming consoles bore me to tears, but the name Wii is so awful, I'm actually paying a little bit of attention to the product.
Mission accomplished.

Agreed. I was in shock at first. The shock is fading, and now I'm kinda more appreciating their bravery in naming it like that. Also, while the "wee" jokes will be intense in the beginning, there's really not a lot of sustainable humor there. Anyone who made a wee = urine/pee-related joke in this thread.. Look back at it, and tell me how much it contributes to your feelings of being a humor genius.
Also, as some blog pointed out, when somebody in Britain (or the US) says, "Hey, we should go to the movies.." does anyone ever go "HAHAHA WEEE SHOULD GO!! HAHAHA!! You said WEE!!" without appearing like a moron?
No.
I am also holding out hope that they have a Wii commercial with a Scotsman in a kilt promoting the Wii's small size.. "AYE! IT'S WEE!!! Special MIDGE edition!"

I'm not so sure. I think the Wii jokes will continue in an endless stream. I mean, Preparation H has been around for decades, and it was still a joke in an Austin Powers movie.

Sure, it will come up from time to time, but the torrent will change to a very slow trickle. Also, preparation H is completely unambiguous. "wii" sounds like "wee" but also like "we", and we're able to use the word "we" everyday without degenerating into juvenile giggling fits.
I am sure the Xbox fanbois will try their hardest to keep Wii jokes at the center of attention, but that's not exactly anything new. They'd come up with some way to bash the name even if it were the most amazing choice ever.
Making it easier for them will actually provide less reason for them to be creative and witty; I predict the ridicule tactics will be less funny and overdone.

My biggest issue with the name is that it doesn't look like a word. It looks like a typo. It needs some kind of consonant in between those two "i"s. Did someone misspell wiki or wifi? Is this supposed to be a Finnish word, which is the only language I've ever seen with double "i"s? Are we just supposed to treat it like a roman numeral and call it a W2, like the tax form? Playful, made-up words are fine, but "Wii" doesn't look like a word. It looks like an acronym gone wrong, at best.

As always, Penny Arcade has said all that needs to be said.
Dropped by to catch the latest comic a few days ago and nearly died.

yeah, the PA strip on it was pretty good. I think Tycho's blog was pretty even-handed about it though. He clearly doesn't like it, but in the end, acknowledges that such an opinion probably won't matter much for the success of the system.
One thing I do like about it is that every day I discover more and more ways to distort it, in good or bad ways. It's almost like the literary equivalent of silly putty. Of course, silly putty can amuse me for hours, so maybe I'm not a good sample.

Anyone with the least exposure to non-English languages would know this was pronounced "wee." The economy is global. Get over your Anglocentricity.
Besides, this could form the basis of a decent ad campaign. Instead of what all the gutter-minds around here instinctively reach for, they could make use of the fact that it also sounds like "whee!"

Funny how much importance is given to a name. I think, like the Mac ProBook, the name is irrelevant to it's success. I think Nintendo is going to have a very competitive product that is not necessarily going to compete directly with the XBox or the Play Station. It's for a deferent market sector and what they claim to be after as far as simplicity and pure game enjoyment seem like pretty good ideas to me.
