I'm just about to purchase a new PowerBook, and I still can't decide if the 1Ghz combo is worth $500 more than the 867 combo.

I'm a writer and graphic designer, so I sometimes work with large (750mb+) Photoshop files.

Thoughts?

Hi
Let's look at it logically.

You get...
1.15x the CPU clock speed
2x the RAM (two 256MB instead of one)
1.5x the Hard Drive space
2x the graphics RAM
Airport card

With the $40 "Double your memory" deal you get 2x more RAM for $40. Get 512MB for $40 compared to 256MB.

With the $40 RAM deal it is 1.21x the price. That is without tax and shipping. Though, ground shipping is free.

If that seems worth $500 to you than your answer is, yes. Good Luck!

Just an update to this:
I ended up going with the 1ghz combo from MacConnection. It included a free (no installation fee) installed 512 mb upgrade and an installed Airport card. $2794, and overnight shipping was under $30.

Also, for some reason, they included two extra 512mb ram modules at no charge, which I guess I'll just sell on eBay.

And speaking of eBay, I know people (including me) have had questions about whether to sell their old machines there, or trade them in via PowerMax. I went with eBay and got several hundred dollars more than PowerMax wanted to give me, plus I don't have to pay shipping.

Lovin' my new 1ghz baby,
-Mike

Hey Old Man,

Congrats! I plan to make the same move if I am able to sell my Cube and iBook for what I want on eBay. So far I almost have gotten what I paid for my iBook but my Cube is bidding slower.

Hope you enjoy your new baby!

Peter

When I first saw the cube in the PX on base some years ago I wanted to buy it so bad. I think its the coolest looking computer ever. I still think the new imac should be totatlly round though and be called the iball.

Jason,

Hi!

Yeah I will miss it if it sells, but I don't need two computers and fell in love with the wireless compatibility of a laptop.

I want to simplify my life!

Peter
