I am networking a tangerine iBook running OS9.1 with a machine running XP for my grandmother. Is there a way to make the two machines share a printer?? It doesn't really matter which computer has the printer the point is to minimize the amount of wires running between the two machines. (right now i have a usb switch connecting both machines with the printer which is an HP DeskJet 842c as well as ethernet cables that connect the machines to a router to share DSL access (horribly inefficient images/icons/grin.gif )) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I can think of 2 ways that you can share the printer.

1) Get an HP Jetdirect USB printerserver. This allows a USB printer to be hooked up to an ethernet based network. ~$200.00

2) Replace your router with one that has a built-in printer server. D-Link makes one (~$150-160) or SMC Barricade router/with 4ports & printer server. This solution allows your printer to be hooked up via its parallel port. I have the SMC wireless Barricade router/with 3ports & print server. Works well with my old Laserjet 6MP. I use it in mixed OS environment as well; Win2K & Mac
