What? My 1G Mini Core Duo plays HD video flawlessly, not to mention the iTunes visualizer. What else could you want at this level?
If you want to play the latest FPS game with all the sliders pegged, go buy an Alienware PC or a PS2. Macs ain't gaming machines.

This is a rather sad joke really. I'd much rather have a core solo chip with a decent graphics chip and dedicated video memory any day.

That would only increase the price and size. Then you might as well get a MacBook Pro in that case.
A Mac mini with a core duo can play HD video and I'm assuming this MacBook can too. A Mac mini with a core solo cannot. Not only that, the previous iBook's graphics chip couldn't do it either. You don't know that a Solo with a card would give you great performance either, keeping in mind they aren't going to jam a high end card into an entry level laptop.
Bottom line is do you want a machine that performs or one that lets you brag specs to your friends?

Overall this is a good upgrade but, of course, everyone would have appreciated it more if they kept the low end at $999.
This wasn't a major annoucement because everyone expected it and these MacBooks don't add any more wow factor other than the 13.3" screen to the Apple laptop line-up.
Hopefully Apple has a surprise in the wings. Something new and maybe tablet-like. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gotta agree with everyone here. Why in the heck is the black casing a $150 premium Apple???? What do you think we're stupid or something?

If people are willing to pay extra for black, then I don't see why Apple should refrain from charging extra for it.
It's not like people are going to buy a Dell because the low-end MacBook only comes in one color.

Unlike the iBook, the keys are separated from one another.

What do you mean? iBook keys are separate.
Do glossy screens have any advantages?
Re price: they're a lot cheaper than the MBPs. Is that all justified by extra features, or is it just a separation of different types of users?
Does anyone know why black laptops are seen as desirable, when virtually every company makes them?

First off, these price-comparisons between the black and white MacBooks are bizarre and unwarranted.
No they're not. From a consumer perspective, it's a very valid comparison. As the customer, I don't care how they handle what you mention as long it isn't impacting the price for me. It's clear that Apple has recognized the increased market demand for the black version. People miss the Pismo and it lineage. When it comes down to it as a customer, asking yourself if black is worth $150 is the most cogent rather than "what is the risk Apple is taking here?" That's an irrelevant concern when you're laying down your cash.

Check out some of the images circulating the web. There's more space. What do you mean? iBook keys are separate.

Because none of them run Mac OS X. I loved my Pismo and the way it looked. If it wasn't $150, I'd get the black.

I hate this fashion of whatever?Brite screens that have glare like a lacquered piano in PC land. Now it's coming to Apple portables? Which screens are next in this trend?

Agreed! Display manufacturers have been struggling to reduce and eliminate as much glare as possible for years. And now it's suddenly become a FEATURE? I was hoping Apple would never succomb to this idiotic trend to satisfy the current MTeeVee generation.
This is just so sad. Hey, I got a great idea! Why not include leg warmers in laptops to make them more usable in those cold winter months?!

Thanks.
On a different tack, I hope Phil Schiller was speaking rhetorically when he said this completes the notebook transition - IBook to MacBook, PowerBook to MacBook Pro. But where's the MacBook Pro Lite?
Oh well, my 12" PB is good for another couple of years.
