At first I thought we had a faulty DSL signal or the modem went bad, but while my mac hung time after time, I realized I was still talking on our IP phone system without any problems. I opened the Thinkpad up and tried it and IE worked fine. Back to the mac, it's now unusable.
I've read some forums on Apple.com that others are having the same problem.
Anyone got a fix or voice to apple to get it right.
Thanks!!!!
Mike

Have you confirmed that all of your intenet settings are correct? Perhaps trying a different browser my provide some useful information to see if the issue is indeed specific to Safari only.
Also, at times simply repairing permissions may resolve the problem if they have been damaged and the system is unable to use saved passwords etc.

Yep, I checked all of the network settings. Nothing unusual. Mail is downloading stuff while safari hangs so I know it's Safari. I even ran cocktail last night. Hangs still today just as much.
There are tons of people compaining about it apple.com forums. I can't be the only one here.
Any other ideas?

A couple things come to mind to try:
For test purposes try Safari in a different User Account.
Back up your Bookmarks, and try placing Safari's prefs in the trash after quitting Safari. It can always be swapped with the new one created after re-launching it:
~[Home]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Let us know how things go...

It get's weird now.
Apple must know about this. I turned on activity viewerr. When it hangs, It shows this error
Posix Error 60
I couldn't capture it all, but a quick search in google showed a lot of people talking about it.
Does that help?

The only thing I ran across for 'Posix Error 60' was having to do with Safari's secure connection doing surveys. This is all new to me, and haven't run across this snag in the past on these boards. This is what I found:
"Posix error 60 using Safari
There is a known problem related to accessing surveys which are secured using HTTPS via the Safari browser on Macintosh computers. This is because Apple's Safari Internet browser has difficulties creating a secure connection over some proxy servers. This means that the browser cannot make a secure connection to SSL-enabled surveys and prevents users who connect via some proxy servers from being able to participate in surveys. We suggest using an alternative browser such as Firefox or Netscape."

Not sure of the date this was even posted either.

Mike, what you could try is this DSL speed check site with IE and Safari browsers separately. There should not be any difference of the connection speeds or not by much. When Safari still looks slow, use the options Reset and Empty Cache under the Safari's menu and Restart your from under Apple menu. Even removing the Safari's preferences like doug posted and then Restart. What this does is gives Safari a fresh batch to browse with.
Have you tried to navigate to the site first instead of using a link? It just seems slow that way with Safari.
