OK, let's stop it right there. "Objective opinion" is a contradiction in terms if ever there was one. The very definition of "objective" is "not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts."

Mistype. Should've said "more objective opinions". (Used to write for magazines. The editors had it in for me then and they have it in for me now. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )
My point is that much of the hands-on seems to be fishing for justification of the black version. It feels like someone who just bought a luxury car and realized, outside the luxury exterior, it really doesn't perform any better. They then try to justify the purchase, knowing full well they made a mistake.
The fact of the matter is, it really ISN'T that great a buy. The $1099, on the other hand, is a pretty solid buy (comparing performance, overall design, etc to PC notebooks). I'm still not a big fan of the screen or chassis's durability, but I can see people buying it and being more than happy.

$200 price increase for black:
$ 30 for the larger hard drive
$ 10 for increased production time due to special plastics
$ 10 for the special black-dyed plastic
$150 'ego market value adjustment' for cool-looking laptop

That said, it is a slick looking machine.

You gave me a link to a comments page. Are you out of your mind? And in case you have time to read your reference source, you will see that the "guys over at Slashdot" did not make any comparisons as you so indicated.
And while you are at it, perhaps you should have someone read and explain Harry's article to you.
That's right! I do apologize to all the 13 year-olds. It appears that you have obviously not reached that age, mentally that is, as yet.

Let's keep it civil and free of personal insults, please.

...it makes little sense to ship a luxury option on a consumer notebook.

Why? Lots of consumers buy luxury items. Heck, of the eight cars in the parking lot outside my office window, there are 2 Mercedes, 1 BMW, 1 Corvette, and 1 Lexus. And the reaction to the black MacBook seems to be pretty clear -- either you have to have one or there's no way you would pay more for one -- so there's probably enough buzz to warrant the extra production costs. FWIW, I think the black looks pretty snazzy, but I am in the latter category. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rumour of the Day: the new, multi-colored, animated iPod ads on the Macworld site are designed to limit and/or slow down postings to the forums by 13-year-olds...
It's obvious in any retail environment that people are willing to pay extra for style or flash that they like. It seems strange to me that people are debating this here. ???
Maybe Apple took a page from the iPod nano experience (where the black iPod nano outsold the white like crazy) and decided to sell the higher end MacBook with a black case. The reason being that they would make more money that way.

Hmm, according to my Mac, "zaftig |zftig; -tik| (also zoftig) adjective informal (of a woman) having a full, rounded figure; plump. ORIGIN 1930s: Yiddish, from German saftig juicy."
While I don't know that it is the wrong usage, it doesn't seem to fit very well. On the other hand it is "informal" so I guess anything goes.

Question:
The trackpad on the new MacBook, like the 17" MackBook Pro, apparently supports two finger right-clicking.
Does this work under Windows too, or will it need an updated trackpad driver?
(It would seem the obvious solution to running Windows on a laptop which has only one mouse button.)

"Zaftig" is used in exactly the correct sense here. A pity you aren't familiar with the word.
But I was surprised that the author suggested the MacBook was zaftig, considering the comparison was to other Mac portables, which are anything but excessive in weight or design, and considering the numerous immense multimedia t*rds in the PC world...

No offense, but you seem to have completely misunderstood the intent of the article and to be projecting your own expectations onto it.
Others' responses have been apt: your comments have not risen to the level of those in the article you complain about. As you have shown, criticism is easy; well-reasoned, clear and intelligent criticism isn't.
I quite enjoyed the subjective review (view, if you prefer) from someone who is presumably more PC-centric than most reviewers yet managed to remain relatively neutral while writing from the "other side of the fence."

That reference to Texas Intruments' "99/4" is mistaken.

Here's the link for proof.

Ah, the memories! I had a 99/4A in 1981 at age 11. Good times! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
