I've been a Mac user for about 2 1/2 years now. When I first purchased my iBook, I also signed up for a .mac account. But I only feature I ended up using was the email. It was too expensive to keep the account for just that, so I didn't renew. Now, though, I find myself wanting to set up a good permanent email address. I was looking at the .mac portion of Apple's website this morning and the pricing is too expensive. However, I did see that one of the pages mentions email only .mac accounts. I can't seem to find how to sign up for one, though. Does anyone know how to do this?
Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good email service?

Dot-Mac email only accounts are sub-accounts available to full dot-mac account holders. For example, you could add another family member as an email-only account to your dot-mac account. But you still need a full priced account first.

ISP email accounts aren't good as permanent accounts, as the OP was looking for. If you ever change service, you can kiss that address goodbye.
Fastmail might be worth checking out. I've heard lots of good things about it.

That's an even better idea actually Peter. Finding the email hosting would be your main task, but getting the domain is cheap. I went on a little frenzy a while back and bought derik.name (yes, that's a real domain name!).

I don't believe you can have just an email account with dot mac. Its one of those all or nothing deals.
I'd probably agree that spending the 99 dollars for the email address is not a good use of funds.
Either use the email address that your isp provides, or get register a domain. Typical packages are less then 99 dollars and you'll have full say in the domain name and email address.

I thought about .mac, since my wife uses it and we could add an account for me. But gmail is free! So I chose that. Give it a try?

That's all I need, another address. I had/have aol originally for (I know more now) for Business. I have my ISP dslextreme, then I have a .mac account. Oh I bought a domain name years ago for something I was going to do but I didn't. It's still good until 2012.
Somehow I think I'm done, multiple accounts, multiple addresses. It keeps my mind active, it goes around in circles. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
