"...update took significant time."
You may want to verify your actual speed (cable broadband is notorious for over stating their rates). My download took about 4 minutes (cable modem in a small town). Less time than it took to compose this message.
In terms of iWeb's abilities, check out nulookgraphics.com. The whole site was done through iWeb. (The notebook graphic came from Keynote and turned 90 degrees). It's amazing how easy it is to use all of the iWork and iLife applications together. Add a little creativity, and no app on any platform can touch it!

Thanks for your reply.
The web connection between my house and ~Telewest (UK Cable) is a rock solid 10 MBS regardless of time of day. Elsewhere on the Internet, downloads can be patchy. I do get 9 MBS from some UK sites. However, both Apple and Microsoft have more than adequate bandwidth for software downloads and I get excellent speeds from the US servers almost without exception.
My download and install was less than 4 minutes. When I use the term ":significant" it is relative to smaller updates particularly from Microsoft. I watched this one through and could not help but think that those on 512 KBS must be a frustrated as hell - just like we were with three hour updates in the dial up era.
I did look at your web site created with iWeb, Keynote and iLife
It is smashing! It is different. It is fresh, particularly to the non Mac folks.
I used a similar spiral binder Keynote approach combining flipped and resized individual page images in a QuickTime Movie through iPhoto rather than Keynote. I added sound. I used page flip transitions throughout. The movies was converted to H.264 which decreased size substantially. This streams OK on the web (Password Site).
I do use iWeb and mainly for family web sites. I use the (Video) Podcast and Photo pages and anything else to maintain the theme style. I do not use it for full sites but rather quick attractive sub-sites hosted on .Mac. That way, the nice album displays remain in tact. I then use iFrames (not ashamed to admit) to include these sub sites in my various family sites.
I recommend a visit tou your website for all of this forum.
Edit
"That way, the nice album displays remain in tact. "
Have you tried hosting your iWeb pages on .Mac. The silde shows are really excellent and quite different to those resulting from a locally exported site and then uploaded.
Example on your site

personally I like iWeb. Ok before all you web design experts start to complain about "dirty code" etc, the whole point of this nice little app is to reach people who have very little clue of what you are talking about or dont care. The first update improved some speed issues and I expect this program can be improved and eventually contain more useful things (a simple way to create your own templates, preview, etc)
I use .Mac and have used it to very easily build a website doing basic things that I need it to do (see profile if interested, nothing fancy...)
As part of iLife it makes sense and I would have bought the package (iLife06) anyway so
