Multi-session DVDs? July06 Working Mac

In the "Working Mac" column in the July 2006 Macworld, the Disk Utility is described. One of the features described on page 69 is the ability to create multi-session DVDs.
This has been a mythical thing because there is no standard defined for doing this. After reading the article, I thought that maybe Apple had cooked up a custom scheme.
Well, I fired up Disk Utility hoping to create a multi-session DVD. My hopes were dashed though. You can see the option but it is grayed out and therefore not selectable.
Was the author Ted Landau able to make a multi-session DVD? If so could you please explain the process?
Or did he fall victim to the mis-information in Disk Utility Help?
