After using the color sampler tool to select a few areas for looking at information for toning a photograph using CS2 (OSX10.4.6) I saved the image as a jpeg.
I was surprised that after opening this image later I noted the color sampler targets remained on the image-- I mean, there were targets labeled 1, 2, 3 on the image after it was saved. I haven't used the color sampler for toning in a while so maybe this is new to CS2, but I never have seen the targets remain with the image after saving.
Is there any way around this besides having to click the "Clear" button after taking color samples?

The Color Sampler Tool is designed that way. The targets remain until you remove them (and as far as I recall, it's always been that way). However, they're only visible when the Eyedropper tools are active (color sampler or eyedropper). Perhaps that's why you never noticed before?
Hitting the Clear button is the easiest way to remove them but you can also just drag them into the ruler area or right click and select delete. Of course, you could create a simple Action to remove them and then assign it a KB shortcut.

Thanks,
I guess it is switching from the sampler tool to others is why I never noted it in previous work.
