I am having a problem with my Imac g5 2Ghz machine, and I'm not sure if it has to do with the video/power issues afflicting imacs and now emacs - according to apple, my machine is a 2nd gen machine, which isn't affected.
Here goes.
My sons had been shutting down the machine by pushing the power button (I know, I know.) One day, the machine wouldn't start. Well, it would start, but it would be asleep as soon as it started - the hard drive would turn, I could hear it running, but I got a screen with nothing (no power) and the white light on the front would blink intermittently. Fearing the worst, I immediately beat the bejeezus out of the boys and freaked out (JUST KIDDING - about the beating part - I did freak out about all the photos, music and files - gone!)
Anyhoo, I thought about it a bit, and thought that if I unplugged the machine and let it sit, that just might work. Voila - it did. The machine started up and ran great, disk first aid and tech tool basic showed no problems. Catastrophe averted.
Now 2 weeks or so later, I am experiencing a whole new level of fun - the Imac simply goes to sleep quite ofter. I do not have any prefs set to put the machine to sleep - it just does it - when I'm typing, surfing, I tunes'ing, whatever - it even went to sleep as it was trying to shut down - which really got me worried.
What worked once should work again, right? I unplugged it for a day or so, then plugged it back in again. It seems to be okay so far, but the fact that this is happening to a 1 year old machine which isn't completely paid for has me antsy. I was never contacted to get extended applecare, so I'm out of warranty. The closest apple retailer/servicer/applestore is a 1.5 hour car ride away. I don't want to spend 90 + bucks at apple to find out they don't know what is wrong. So here I am.
What I am wondering is this - has anyone else had a problem like this? Is it related to the video/power thing just announced again today? My machine seems to have power - it's just asleep. Is this related to powering down the wrong way? Is this hardware or software related? What do I do? This is the most convenient way (and economical) to get some direction - I'll gladly take this baby to the applestore in King Of Prussia if I need to, but right now I'm flailing around in the dark.
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!
BTW
Imac G5
2Ghz
1GB DDR SDRAM (apple installed)
372 GB hitachi hard drive
miss anything?

thanks for the info - the mac boots fine, as it is now, but a few days after pulling the plug for a bit and then plugging it back in and powering up, it will just go to sleep - dims out, no screen saver, and the white light flashing at me,mocking me.
Anyway, I'm from Shavertown - right outside of WIlkes-Barre. As you may know, the closest Mac repair shop is in Allentown,I think. Plus, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.
Pretty dang soggy here right now - just cleaning up my flooded basement - so glad I moved out of the flood plain and into the hills!

man, I don't even know if you're still there, but I'm having good thoughts for you folks - you are getting hammered.
Tell you the truth, as of now - 9pm on wednesday - I don't see how wilkes-barre can avoid a flood - the water was roughly 6 feetfrom the top of the levee when I passed by after work at about 5:15 - my wife said it was inches at about 8pm when she was coming home from work. ANd the mighty susquehann hasn't even crested yet.
from what I see, you folks are well over flood stage. Keep dry and safe. Nature is sure a bitch. Hope you got your mac to higher ground! (among other things)
be safe
