Help! My son is taking a HS class on HTML, but he's having trouble getting it to work on my iMac...and I'm at a loss as to what is wrong.
- when we use Word or TextEdit (and save the file in .htm format), the Safari webpage shows all the code/tags (as if we are viewing it in Word/TextEdit). I had the same results with Opera.
- I emailed the same code to my PC at work. Same results when using Word (and IE). But I was FINALLY able to get it to work using NotePad to edit the code...in this case, the webpage displayed correctly, and required no changes to the tags, etc., that I had used on the Mac...
So my question: is there a work-around for this, so we can do the webpage development at home on the Mac? How can/should we edit the text, to correct for mistakes, make additions, etc.?
(As an aside, his assignments are supposed to be done the "hard way," without using special software, etc.)
Many thanks, as always! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hey jtrang
try saving it as .html instead of .htm. just a thought.
also... you can download a trial version of macromedia dreamweaver and theres a section for just coding... so its the same as using textedit except it wont mess up.

In TextEdit, set the preferences to Plain Text instead of Rich Text and start a new document. In Word, make sure to save it as the Text Only format.

thanks for the suggestions...amazing how little things can turn the code sour (MS Word was particularly bad...when saving as "html," it inserts TONS of metatags that you aren't even aware of).
I also found some freeware that I really like: Taco HTML Editor. It color codes the tags, and has a preview pane that lets you edit in one window and view the webpage in another, at the same time. it also has many other feature that look useful...I've only played with it for a day, but so far, so good!

In reply to:

That's why I specifically didn't suggest using Word's HTML format. If you save in the Text Only format and use an htm (or html), extension in the file name, the code you've entered will remain and won't get buggered.
It would seem that using Taco HTML wouldn't adhere to the "hard way" requirement. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As others have posted, Word isn't a good idea to use, because of all the extra coding. In Text Edit, though, if you save the file as plain text, and change the file extention to .htm or .html, you should be ok. I have used this sometimes myself for quick code editing, but for the most part use Dreamweaver.
But if you save Text Edit as plain text, you should be ok...
