iMovie Artifacting problem

Can anyone help me with this,
I have an older iMac(2000) and have edited footage in iMovie just fine as far as the video clips go. When I add any audio tracks however, the video atifacts terribly upon playback. I have deleted all the clips in the clip hanger, cleaned out the trash can and have 5.6 gigs of space available for use in the use bar, which is green. The footage came from a sony handycam digital8 TRV 280.

Okay. Where are you playing the video back? Just in iMovie itself or have you tried burning the video to a DVD just to see if it's only an "on screen" occurance? And by that I mean when iMovie is producing the video and audio in real time.
