As Peter Cohen said that these are GigaBit NAS (Network Attached Storage Drives. The USB is for adding additional drives to the NAS System. I have a 400 GB Buffalo LinkStation NAS. It has USB ports on it, but a GigaBit Ethernet port is the way you connect the drive to your network, rather than just one computer.

I advise everyone to stay clear of LaCie drives. I have nothing but failures in the last couple of months. When you open them, their shock absorbing mountings are basically non-existent. Just packing them up in my briefcase caused massive damage to 2 of my 4 LaCie Extremes.
On the other hand, I have nothing but praises for the OWC (macsales.com). And they publish limits on vibration and shock to their drives, unlike LaCie!
