Actually, this has happened in a way - sans photo. Many museums are using podcasts to provide (free) audio tours for their exhibits. Some folks are creating guerilla tours, without the knowledge or, in some cases, the blessing of the museum. And I love both ideas. Anything to help the public connect with a museum is a good thing!
But, as an eight year veteran of the museum field w/ a masters degree in museum studies, I have to take a good natured stand against something you said: "Museums make lots of money from their guides and guided tours (virtual and otherwise)." SO not true! The overwhelming majority of museums barely make enough off admissions or tours to pay the electric bill. Seriously. The lions share of funding comes from endowments, public money, and/or the people's donations. But, like any nonprofit, most struggle with finances. Don't let the shiny objects and pretty buildings fool you. Most museums barely run in the black.
So support your local museum! They sure could use it!

This is one of the best companies out there, and it even has a "Da Vinci Code" tour. Check it out. http://www.soundwalk.com/ I live in NYC and the neighborhood tours are fantastic. The guides are long-time residents and enthusiasts of the areas they talk about, and it really comes through. Disclaimer: I don't work for these guys, I just love their product.
