Learn how to prevent certain users from appearing in the 10.4 login window. [more]

I have the item "Other..." in my login window although none of the accounts (there is only one now) are hidden.
Is there some other way to remove this item? I am not sure but think it happened after an update to os x a few months ago, I certainly did not always have it.
Thanks

This seems a bit complex. Why not just set the login options to display login window as name and password? Then all the accounts are hidden and you can only get in if you know both a username and password.

I don't know if this is your case or not but you will have the Other... option if your machine is bound to an Active Directory server.

I'd say its worth checking your Directory Access utility and see if LDAP or Active Directory have been checked and configured.

Thanks for your help, I looked and LDAPv3 was checked, so I unchecked it, restarted and the Other... is still there. Got any other ideas?

Unfortunatley no. The Other... option shows up for me when I bind our Macs to our Active Directory system. I know one way to get rid of is it to set the login options to display a username and password field but that still doesn't explain why your machine is wanting to look somewhere else to get login authentication.

I think "Other" appears when you've enabled the root account and/or set the master password on your system. Root doesn't appear in the users list and it's accessible only via Other.
And I agree, why not just select Display login window as: "Name and password" and be done with it? I don't understand this hint very well.

Here's an additional tip for making your Mac more secure against unauthorized intrusion.

[*]Create a new account and make sure to check "Allow user to administer this computer."
[*]Log out of your "everyday" account and log into the new administrative account.
    [*]Open the Accounts preference pane.
[*]Select your "everyday" account and uncheck "Allow user to administer this computer."
[*]Use the "Hide Users" hint to hide the new administrative user.
[*]Log out of the admin account and log back into your usual account (or restart).
    [/list]
You've now secured your Mac from casual intrusion. Even if someone has access to your computer, they will be restricted from doing too much damage because your account no longer has admin privileges. However, you will still be able to authenticate for installations and/or secure preferences by using your "secret" admin username and password. If you need to do anything heavy duty, you can also temporarily login as the admin user when needed.
Give the new user a short name that is easy to remember and short to type as you will have to enter it manually everytime you want to install software or modify a secure preference.
    Regards,
    Rob

Because on a shared work machine you don't need Monkey1, or a shared family machine We'un1, We'un2, We'un3, to have to remember their UIDs and PWDs (Note that Rob had a wife and kid in his login list). There's a good chance that those limited accounts might have no password at all.

Doesn't seem to work on my intel imac. Pasted text into terminal window. no errors on command execution. Logout and login screen looks the same. Tried reboot also.
Is there something I might be missing?
Tks

Did you customize the text for the short usernames you want to hide? You can't just copy and paste exactly what I typed.
Also, I tested it on my MacBook, so I know it works on Intel Macs, too...

Meaning, rather than 'accountX', type in the actual login names of the accounts you want to hide. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
