Hi
Mine reached 86C the both times so far I've ripped / converted DVDs for my iPod.

An infrared thermometer might be going a little over board here in regular households.
Thingies more close to home can do the trick for a much less if not any cost if you already have them on hand.-- You could use a baby thermometer too, This maybe not, it might get toasted- one of those sticky sticker forehead thermometers might do well too. But, whatever works /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Strange, after reading this thread I decided to see what the cpu temp would max at on my macbook (stock 1.83). With both cores maxed out the fans came on but it wouldnt get above 46? C, it also idles about 46 as well. This is especially strange as it was idling at 65 yesterday. Am I just lucky or is there something wrong with my temp sensor?
Note: my macbook just arrived friday, could it be that apple changed something in the manufacturing process?

i turned on my macbook about a half-hour ago, and it's idling around 40 degrees celsius. i think that it increasingly gets hot the longer my computer stays on. also, i don't know how accurate coreduotemp is... yesterday, it was idling around 65, and today its 40? strange...
anyway, i was thinking of getting a laptop cooler. not an expensive one, just $20. maybe the targus notebook chill mat, or the vantenc lapcool3. any experience with either of these?

Does the reflectance have an effect? I was under the impression, by the mfg. rep, that it measures radiative temp regardless of surface material.

what I'm wondering is: The area's of the physical laptop may be different in temperature than other's, so the option of using a phsical device vs. a widget app. might have better results according to the placement of the physical temp. measurement device.
Does this sound illogical? Maybe it's just me, I have to see to believe and have something to sink my teeth and mind into.
As with my eMac and G3's I have not much of a concern- They're desk top models.
This is a test...

You are correct. From what I understand is that the Widget app that MC is using reads the temperature from the 2 digital thermal sensors built on the CPU die itself. Using this method I would imagine that it yields a slightly higher temperature than what is radiating from the external case. I wanted to see the temp that is on the external case itself. I.e. what my lap would be feeling with the MB on it. This would explain why my average temp is a bit lower than what MC reported.
Honestly though, the only time the computer got soo hot that it was uncomfortable on my lap is during ripping DVDs and running Windows on Parallels. But those times it sits on a desk anyway. When I used the MB for web browsing, emailing, word processing, iPhoto... it ran cool enough for my lap.

I should have not simplified it so much by using the term reflectance... you are correct in that it is the radiated IR energy that is quantified. Radiated energy is a function of emissivity which is different for various surfaces and materials. In common devices, assumption is made that the surface to be read is grey with a constant emissivity but that is not always the case. For this reason many devices have the adjustments for emissivity values. Some devices make the measurement at multiple wavelengths simultaneously and attempt to correct the errors introduced due to differences in emissivity by using established relattionships of energy output at the used wavelengths and assuming that emissivity at those wavelengths is constant... which is a useful enough method but not always entirely true.
From a practical standpoint, one can stick a dark grey thin Al tape to the surface to be read, where such a method is possible, to more accurately read the temp. But here too, a variable is introduced... teh overall heat conductivity should not be substantially altered by the tape and glue. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Not sure how much you want to know but before someone starts jumping up and down about it not being directly relevant to solving their Mac related problems, I'll stop and if you need further information, send me a note and I'll be happy to elaborate or provide sources you can peruse.

Alam, I am very much interested in the info. I explained it all in a long PM to you but it got returned because of your PM quota. I'll try again later.
Thanks

well, apple released a firmware update around a week ago, and everything seems to be much cooler. the fans come on more often, and even though it's a bit noisier (barely audible), i'd rather have a loud, cool laptop than a soft and melting one.
anyway, does anyone have any advice on the antec usb-powered notebook cooler? you can find it at amazon for around $30, or at compUSA for around $40. i was thinking about purchasing it, just for peace of mind. anything particularly bad/good about it? thanks in advance.
