Hi there,
I have an ibook 12" with version 10.4.7 and 1.5GB Ram
I recently noticed that even if I have add from system preferences - energy saver my ibook to go to sleep after 10 minutes and put the display to sleep in 7 minutes my ibook never go to sleep. It is only puts the display to sleep.
The strange is that when I force the ibook to sleep hitting the power button or from the Apple logo there is no a problem, it is going to sleep and wake up fine
I tried the following:
Restart the PMU (No solution)
Delete the library/preferences/system configuration/ com.apple.powermanagement.plist and restart (no Solution)
I went to safe mode to see if the problem exists and yes still there no auto sleep after 10 minutes.
The only login items are mail and ical I disable them (No solution)
I went to my wife's account still the problem lies.
I tried to check/uncheck the "Put the hard disk to sleep etc (No solution)
What is going on? Why the auto sleep does not work?
Please help me
Thanks in advance

I believe this a default OS sleep since you and others updated to OS 10.4.7. This happens to my iMac too ever since I updated to OS 10.4.7 even with my Sleep settings at 15min. I guessing Apple is energy conscious more than we have our Sleep settings at. I know when my Sleep settings are on is when I have to log back into the system. With the default settings, you just press any key or move the mouse to get back in the system. Pretty good wishingful thinking of Apple, don't you think!!!

I am officially confused by your post. Apple has made no changes to the way sleep works that override a user's own settings. My PowerBook G4 has no trouble entering full sleep at the set time (OS 10.4.7).

There are a number of reasons why your Mac isn't sleeping. A very common one is that you turned on file sharing and someone is connected to your Mac. There is other software that will prevent automatic sleep as well. You should check to see what services you have on and what software is running automatically.

On my Mac running 10.3.9, Norton Antivirus causes inconsistent sleep. I dont remember if that is true of both versions 9 and 10, but definitely 10. This would also make sense of the fact that switching users doesnt fix the problem because NAV usually installs for all users of a machine.

What I see from his post,Typhoon 14, is his iBook goes to Sleep in around 7 minutes which is what he didn't set for System preferences in Energy saver. This is I'm sure is a display sleep and my assumption is an OS default sleep in the OS 10.4.7 update. This happens in my system and it too should show up in others in assumption. I understand that he could set the system sleep without a hitch. This is very much different from display. This where his doubts shows. The display sleeps before his schedule setting 10 minutes in Energy Saver. I think I'm just about where his suspicions and douts lies. It seems genuine, maybe he seems a little irritated but I think I grasp the idea.
You may not see the default sleep in action because you are probably more active than most or some of us. It shows up in around what he mention and I haven't actualy timed the sleep myself. It did surprise me for one. This change is along with the sleep light mode not turn on during the day if I recall correct, my surprise too!!!!
You haven't notice any difference to Sleep Mode? Some did. I did and I thought I was going rack my brain or somebody help me figure this one out.
macnuke, I think it is there in the update. Unless I'm hallucinating, it happens with my iMac. I drink my beers daily which don't do the trick!!!! Hmmm maybe sometime it does, I can't recall.
Apple's wishful thinking goes unnotice.

This Sleep thing is getting kooky in my iMac. OK, before the display sleep comes up before my schudule setting of 15min but now it seems to blend with my schedule without I needing to log-in. I have the option "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" checked for extra precuation.
It is no pain in the butt to have auto log-in. Call me parnoid!!!! The log-in pane comes up whenever. I am not going to spend time finding when this plethora of wishful thinking. I just want my schedule sleep back. It seems OK, I guess.
What I'm really wishing for is the ability to turn off or on external devices or those devices turn off when I turen off my iMac. This is like the mouse and keyboard that comes with the system. I can tell if that belongs in the Energy Saver. This can be had probably since other divices like TV and DVD and other powered electronic devices by activated remote control. I think it is just hard(system) sleep like in the Energy Saver. Now, for some more wishful thinking from Apple, this could be done thru cabling. HD makers could need to get into this act. They have remote control now for some Macs. Why not remote shutdown for external devices? With iTunes getting backups in extenal devices and download movies eating up main harddrive space, an external harddrives makes sense in storing all those stuff and makes more sense to get the ability to turn on or off the external devices. This could somehow help Time Machine when Leopard arrives. It would be awesome if I could click on an external HD icon in the Desktop and that HD comes alive. Whaddya think? I'm getting ahead of Apple, uh!!!!
