Editors' Notes Weblog: Final first impressions of Leopard

Vista is about to hit Release Candidate 1 stage. It's silly to think Microsoft could copy any major feature from Apple at this late stage in their development cycle. I suspect their "top secret" features either don't exist yet, or are too unstable to show.
The fact that Leopard will be fully 64-bit is probably the biggest news (but not exactly sexy). I wonder if it will be 64-bit on both Intel and PowerPC G5 platforms, though? Does anybody know?

Yes, they stated it will be 64bit on both G5s and Intel 64-bit-capable chips.
Another possibility is that Leopard actually takes some of Vista's design cues for 3D windows, etc., and maybe that's why they didn't want to show them /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

It would be foolish of Jobs and Apple to tease the developers (and public) with talk of "top secret" features upcoming in Leopard only for us later to learn this was pure "marketing spin." Apple would bring down a deluge of bad press on itself at the very time, (the eve of the Leopard release) when it would least want it.
So I find it VERY unlikely that this is marketing spin. In fact, "Marketing 101" would teach that to create expectations and then turn around and offer nothing to meet them is only a prescription for a marketing and PR disaster.

You too?
Another thing, on top of the long list of bugs I have already posted, is date order in Finder won't set to my top down preference.
Also I have certain folders that seem to be stuck in a permanent time warp of 09/06/2006. No matter what or when files get saved there, that's their date.

Jeff I always get this odd annoying itch behind my right ear, everytime I hear the Leader whip up the crowd with stories of Secret Weapons.
Besides how are developers going to prep their software for Leopard if features pop out of the hat at the last minute?

I don't think the top secret slide was just a marketing spin. I think Steve honestly needed to keep Redmond from copying some of these features that he has labled top secret. I'm sure when these top secret features are revealed some real headlines will be made. And Vista will look even older than it does now.

On the subject of losing sounds, and other weird sound problems, you may want to try this:
In /Applications/Utilities, run "Audio MIDI Setup.app" and under the Audio Devices tab make sure the Audio Output, Format field is set to 44100 Hz. Some apps change this behind your back and some settings (other than 44100) can cause some really weird sound problems.
Why Apple has a setting in Audio MIDI Setup that affects sounds other than MIDI is beyond me, but they do. I just noticed that mine has been changed (again) to 32000. Wish I knew who was doing it.
