Besides Photoshop, Bridge (comes with Adobe Creative Suite, and works with Photoshop), and Portfolio, to name a few. I use all three, with good results. Most of my workflow is RAW, and this works well.
And, Portfolio is now Universal Binary--so speed shouldn't be an issue, either...

The current version of Aperture will run on the current MacBooks but it's not officially supported by Apple so you won't get any tech support.

Aperture is not a photo editing tool, it is a photo organizational tool with some limited touch up capabilities.
Photoshop is the defacto photo editing tool. For most comsumer level user Photoshop Elements is more than sufficent of that use.
For far less you can get the same functionality as PS in GIMP. .

I'd hardly call it that. For many folks who don't need or do anthing sophisticated with photos, iphoto is all they will need and is easy for them.
If your needs take you to a higher level, of course there is Photoshop, or PS Elements.
Apeature is not for editing, as this thread aptly describes.
Apeature Vs Elements
