Maybe you missed it or were looking at the simple point and shoot cameras but they make cameras like that.

then its time to look at a dslr like the D50. It looks like they are done with coolpix point and shoot/slr hybrids which I think had hot shoes, but not lens choices. dslr's are the only ones you can change the lens.

They do have SLR cameras with hot shoes. They were making cameras they were in between the ultra small and the SLR. e.g. the 5400 and the 8700. I would like to have a small camera and an external flash about the size of the small camera that I could quickly attach to the camera. That could fit in my pockets. An SLR wouldn't fit.
