If you’re running 10.4.7, you can use a hidden program to download files from dragged URLs. [more]

Thank you very much Rob, all I need now is an URL that isn't just one of those annoying php scripts.

I use wget in Terminal with the -x option so that downloaded files are put in a directory in the same format as the URL.

Maybe I'm crazy but I can't find this app on my G5 or PowerBook both running 10.4.7. I don't even have a CoreServices folder.

wget doesn't seem to come with 10.4 but I just use curl.

You do, but you can't find it with Spotlight (it won't index System folders). Just type Shift-Command-G, then enter /System/Library/CoreServices in the dialog box, and you'll jump right there.

or you can paste the URL into safari and hold down the option key when hitting enter or return to force the file to download instead of load

But then you still have to load Safari. And you have to leave it running when you're doing a download.

I've been itching to get to the Network Diagnostics app more easily and the method described in this article does the trick, sort of. I dragged the app out and put it on the desktop but when I earlier tried to create an alias by using apple key-option, as suggested (noticing that that option isn't available as a menu option...) my cursor turns into a hand and when I try to move the app, the whole window slides over and I am unable to drag anything. Why is that? It doesn't really matter now that I have a copy of the app but if I can get an alias, that'd be better.
Question #2: Is it bad to have TWO of these Core Services apps at once (some moreso than others)? I want to put the one I dragged out in a new folder in the Applications folder, probably in the Utilities folder but want to know that the OS won't be unhappy with two versions of it. (Ideally I want an alias though...) I realize that should the OS update it, I will need to have the updated version dragged out to it's new location...
Thank you.
