What's taking them so long? I guess I'll have to wait till next year to buy a new Mac. I asked at the Apple store if there was a way to use the Mac with Verizon Wireless. They seemed to think there was a way, but they were pretty clueless.

What about a USB or Ethernet device? Something like what you get with a Cable Modem, but small and battery powered.

If you check with Verizon Wireless, you'll find that the V640 ExpressCard they're selling today ($180 plus the cost of service) is compatible with Mac OS X v10.4.7 or later.

Novatel Wireless makes a device calle dthe MCD-3000, resold by Sprint called the USB 720, and that's supposedly Mac-compatible.

Tested a Sprint Samsung SPH-A900 EV-DO phone via Bluetooth and USB cable with my MacBook last week. Download speed was about 200Kbps and upload was about 90Kbps. Just a quickie test but confirmed to me that this is a viable setup as long as you don't mind having your phone tied up. Great for infrequent useage and for emergencies.
Bluetooth is cool but USB will run better and save your phone's battery.

Jughead - Did you need a seperate hi-speed data plan to do this or did it work with the phone data plan?

Depending on your service provider, the data plan on your phone should be sufficient. You will need a username and password to access the network services though. If your provider doesn't give you that, you will be out of luck.
Some providers require you to buy a more expensive dedicated service plan for data.
Using bluetooth is convenient, but if you will be limited by the speed of the bluetooth connection which is about a 1.5 meg connection tops. USB will let you get the full 3.1 meg connection, if you have a good strong signal.
